As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."

From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Weiter nordwärts
Further north

After a quiet night in Zaandam, we resumed our journey to Alkmaar. Here's a nice view of Plan B ready to go.

We turned the corner out of the marina and the peaceful morning was soon disrupted. A barge came out of the lock we wanted to pass through while another barge appeared from behind us. So there we were, the meat in a barge sandwich. The entrance to the Wilhemina lock is just behind the middle of the barge in this photo. The barge exiting the lock wanted to moor along the side of the canal where we thought we could wait. We moved, of course, but we couldn't read the situation very well. Who wanted to do what? And we had no radio, a deficit we intend to correct, soon. But with typical Dutch calm and good will, and with a fair bit of maneuvering, we all managed to go where we wanted, and the lock operator kindly kept the doors open for us. But the lesson was clear: a quiet night can be followed by an active morning.

Endlich in der Schleuse.

In the end, we were all alone in the lock. Ahh.

We reviewed what had just happened and were reasonably pleased with our performance. Better too timid than too bold with those barges, we say.

There I am, at it again. I'm not just the skipper, I can't stop taking pictures too.

But there really are a lot of worthy subjects along the way. Rather than a uniform drawbridge design, the Dutch have allowed sculptural and even quite playful shapes to perform the task of lifting roadways. I'm a fan of innovative bridge design so I'm a happy camper on these waters.

We did have a patch of heavy rain today, waiting for a bridge to open. Aila tended her ropes and kept her upper lip stiff.

The Zaan River goes through what's called Old Holland and many houses fit that bill.

As is so often the case in the Netherlands, the old and the new share the landscape.

We drove past Zaanseschans, a kind of open air windmill museum. There were about a dozen old mills along the canal.

We moved into an old industrial area in Wormerveer with quite wonderful brick warehouses and factories, many now restored.

And here's Mercury's house, fitting since he's the god of commerce.

Dies ist die Seifensiederei De Adelaar.

And the totally awesome Adelaar (eagle) soap factory. Bruce Wayne: Your shower is ready!

Here, we're approaching the unserviced moorings where you can simply tie up and spend the night. That's our plan.

Here we are, all tucked in for the night.

Neira macht ihren Schönheitsschlaf,

Neira enjoyed a beauty nap…

… Pippo studiert das Verhalten der Wasservögel,

… while Pippo remained alert, guarding against these odd punk geese.

... und ich bereite diesen Post vor.

But he also succumbed to slumber while Aila prepared today's post.

I once again charmed a local into sharing the password for a restaurant's network. Who can refuse me?

And Aila performed the fine tuning and then uploaded the post. Teamwork, in sailing and in blogging.
