Sure, it's a lovely view. Our showers are in the house to the right of the windmill. But what's that big dome lurking in the background, we wondered. It's not identified on any tourist maps. Well, a short walk revealed it's a jail. And here's a mind-boggler: There are three such domed penitentiaries in Holland, the first two were built by an architect and the third one by his son. What a funny family business, indeed.
In der Windmühle befindet sich ein Museum und in dem Kuppeldom ein Gefängnis. Es ist eines von drei Kuppelgefängnissen in den Niederlanden und beherbergt 400 Zellen. Nächstes Jahr soll es geschlossen werden. Was wohl dann aus dem Dom werden wird … ein Kulturzentrum? Läden? Wohnungen?
This one will be decommissioned next year. It's a handsome structure and we wonder what will happen to it.

The museum is an improbable monument to 19th century science, full of amazing gizmos. These are Leyden (or Leiden) jars, an early method of 'capturing' static electricity. There are also fossils and minerals and two rooms of paintings. And the building itself, dating from the late 18th century, is bold and elaborate, with a vast oval gallery and grand rooms.
