Gestern stand der Merwedekanal auf dem Reiseprogramm. Laut PC Navigo bedeutet das von Arkel bis zum Jachthafen Marnemoende bei Ijsselstein insgesamt 14 'Operationen', inklusive drei Schleusen. Das Schleusen beginnt schon in Arkel, doch die Arkelschleuse steht, oh Wunder, für uns offen: wir haben grünes Licht, der Gegenverkehr muss warten.
Yesterday we set off from Arkel aiming to get through the Merwede Canal on our journey to Leiden. We turned the corner from our quiet mooring and there was our first canal lock, open and waiting for us to pass while the traffic in the other direction stood back.
Und so geht es weiter. Schleuse folgt auf Schleuse, Brücke auf Brücke.
And that set the pattern for much of the day: bridge after bridge opened magically for us, like a long run of green lights on 2nd Avenue.
Schon nach der ersten Brücke finden wir uns in einem Dreierverband wieder, was sich als äusserst hilfreich erweist. Die Leute im führenden Boot scheinen genau zu wissen, wie schnell sie fahren müssen, um auf einer Grünen Welle zu reiten.
We picked up company en route and soon we were a trio. The lead boat set the pace, perfectly timing the bridge openings along the canal.
So fahren wir durch alle 14 Zug-, Hebe- und Drehbrücken, ohne auch nur einmal anzuhalten. Sesam öffne dich!
So it went, past the 14 bridges that needed to open for us. (There were more, but they had enough clearance.) We sometimes had to hover dead in the water for a few moments, or even get ready to tie up, but in fact we never had to tie up once. Open sesame!
Bleiben natürlich immer noch die Schleusen. Wie man sieht, ist die Crew mittlerweile gut trainiert, Hunde inklusive. Alle kennen ihren Platz.
There were three canal locks, too, and here we see that the crew is tightening up its act, dogs included. They are now quite relaxed when we leave the bridge to tie up for a moveable bridge or a lock. Could it be that the humans are a bit calmer and the dogs are responding to the less stressed atmosphere?
Immer noch im Trio, überqueren wir den Lek. Sportboote, grosse Frachtkähne und Gänsefamilien kommen hier gut aneinander vorbei.

Einfahrt in die Koniginnensluis in Vreeswijk.
One of the canals was the 19th century Queens Canal, with two locks.
Sie sieht richtig gemütlich aus, die Königinnenschleuse. Es ist eine Doppelschleuse mit zwei Kammern von je 120 Metern Länge und fast 12 Metern Breite. Die Seile sind ganz hilfreich, um anzulegen.
All was peaceful as we three small boats sat in the first artful chamber, draped with ropes to help us tie up.
Ooops. Da kommt noch jemand.
Uh-oh. Someone else joined the group. The lock is 120 meters long and this barge probably filled about 90 of them.
Der Frachter rauscht durch die erste Schleusenkammer, in der wir uns befinden, gleich weiter in die zweite.
The barge slid into the second chamber and moved to right wall.
Erst danach dürfen wir auch rein. Dies bleibt an diesem Tag unsere einzige Nahbegegnung mit einem Frachtkahn. Wogegen wir natürlich überhaupt nichts einzuwenden haben, auch wenn die Dinger wirklich faszinierend sind.
We followed at a respectful distance and when the time came to move out, the barge was first through the open gate. Who would possible argue that size doesn’t matter?
Bald nach der Passage der Königinnenschleuse biegen wir in die Hollandse Ijssel ein. Hier ist es wieder ganz gemütlich, technisch aber nicht weniger interessant. Dies ist eine Liftbrücke. Hier ist sie unten,
Shortly thereafter we made a tight left turn into the connecting canal to the Hollandse Ijssel River. The route took us through a built-up area with lots of streets and we found this variant of moving bridge particularly cool. Here it is starting to levitate…

…and here it is fully raised for boat passage. Nice idea nicely executed!
Diese Zugbrücke ist hingegen eine altmodische Variante. Der Brückenwart in der gutniederländisch orangen Weste bedient die Barrieren per Hand und setzt dann das Zugseil mittels einer Handkurbel in Gang.

Kurz danach folgt eine weitere Zugbrücke, diesmal neueren Baujahrs. Wir diskutieren noch, ob wohl der eine Brückenwart den anderen per Telefon über unser Kommen informiert, da radelt schon der Kerl in der orangen Weste heran. Die Frage ist damit beantwortet: Muskelkraft statt Technik und Arbeitsplatzbeschaffung.
We soon came to the next bridge that needed raising and just as we were speculating about whether there was any coordination between the two bridges, the guy in the orange jacket appeared on his bike and raised the second bridge. Again, no lengthy wait!
Am frühen Nachmittag erreichen wir den Jachthafen Marnemoende bei Ijsselstein. Hier werden wir bis nach dem Pfingstwochenende bleiben. Es gibt ein gutes Restaurant,
A few kilometers further we came to the Jachthaven Marnemoende, an attractive marina next to a small lake and surrounded by good walking country. With another long weekend coming up, we think we’ll sit it out here.
… und man kann herrlich baden; wenn man will, sogar vom Boot aus.

Schöner ist das Baden aber am See, wo man auch mit den Hunden spazieren kann.
