As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."

From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Rainy and a lot cooler, we started off on our journey to Decize. Our goal for the day was a stop called Fleury-sur-Loire because the skipper of Balu, a savy fellow we met in Montargis, said it was that an outstanding open-air restaurant could be found there.

But first came Guetin's double lock. Together, they total a 9.25 meter change in elevation. The first chamber is a bit more than 5 meters deep.

The second chamber, at 4 meters, is also nothing to scoff at.

Aila got a good soaking as she managed the ropes in the locks.

Once we were out of the Guetin locks, we motored over the Allier River, where we had bathed the day before. This canal bridge is 343 meters long.

Ein enthusiastischer Wachhund.

Good dog on duty.

Most locks have houses nearby that were and in many cases still are residences for the lockkeepers. They are uniformly well cared for and well landscaped but this one at Fleury was, ahem, a bit overdone.

The lock at Abron, however, was a winner, with fragrant lavender planted right next to the lock chamber. Most thoughtful.

And the lock at Acolin is hedged-up, isn't it?

The harbor at Decize lies on water that links the Canal latéral à la Loire with the much-loved Canal Nivernais (where Plan B is too tall to travel.) To enter the harbor, and/or the passage to the Nivernais, you have to pull the rod hanging from this steel arm. Always something new.

And here we are, entering the Port de Decize, where we'll take on a couple of welcome visitors for a tour. More on that in the next post!
