Plötzlich ist es Sommer geworden. Und wie! In den nächsten Tagen werden die Temperaturen auf weit über 30 Grad ansteigen. Höchste Zeit also, dass wir unser Kühlschrankproblem lösen. Der lässt sich, wie bereits erwähnt, leider nicht über unsere Sonnenkollektoren betreiben.

Wenn man in Friesland Hilfe braucht für etwas, das auch nur entfernt mit Booten zu tun hat, dann begibt man sich nach Sneek. Dazu muss man das Sneekermeer überqueren.

Unsere Anlaufstelle ist Aqua Solar, eine kleine Firma, die sich (wie der Name ja schon sagt) mit Sonnenkollektoren für Boote beschäftigt. Sie befindet sich op t' Ges, einer Art Shopping Center für Boote.
We wanted to complete our solar project. We had the panels, the big battery and the high-efficiency (albeit domestic) fridge, but the latter wasn't working with the former. Off grid we faced warm beer and soft butter. And with summer finally here, we had to find an answer pronto.
Aqua Solar ist nicht ganz leicht zu finden. Zunächst verirren wir uns in die Werft von De Valk, wo ganz grosse Schiffe für den ganz grossen Geldbeutel verkauft werden.
Our search led us to t'Ges, an industrial park reachable by water and devoted to boats. Granted, most of the businesses are brokers but passing a De Valk outlet like this one is good for the aspirational spirit. Just look at that trawler. It was so tall at first we thought it was out of the water. What a beast!
Nach einigem Herumirren finden wir schliesslich die richtige Hafeneinfahrt.
We noodled around the waterways, looking for one place in particular. We can't imagine an area like this anywhere else, a shopping center explored by boat.

The dogs had their doubts but we pressed on.
Endlich: Aqua Solar in Sicht.
And there it is: Aqua-Solar. Salvation at last?
Hier nimmt sich ein netter Herr mit einem unaussprechlichen friesischen Namen unserer an. Er misst, wieviel Elektrizität aus unserem Wechselrichter rauskommt, jenem Ding also, das 12 Volt von der Batterie in 220 Volt für den Kühlschrank umwandelt. Und erklärt uns dann mitfühlend, dass es nicht ausreichend genug ist, um unseren schönen und eigentlich recht effizienten Haushaltkühlschrank zu betreiben.
This gentleman is Chjoiten, or thereabouts. (Friesland is as justly proud of its dialect as any Swiss canton.) His name sounds a bit phelgmy to our ears but his knowledge is sharp. He measured the output of our inverter --- the thingee that converts 12 Volt energy from the battery into 220 V current for the fridge. The conclusion: it ain't happening. Our new, indeed quite efficient domestic fridge just couldn't get started with the meager energy we were feeding it. Result: another example of buyer's regret.
Während sich die Herren mit technischen Fragen beschäftigen, vergnüge ich mich mit den Vierbeinern auf freiem Feld. Das frisch geschnittene Gras scheint Hoffnung auf Mäuse zu wecken.
While Roy and Gkrotechhh discussed options, it fell to Aila to take the dogs across the road for a tour. They immediately got up to no good. Mouse-hunting.
Pippo erleidet dabei einen nicht endenwollenden Niesanfall, was bei der Menge Heu, die er einatmet, kaum erstaunt.
Pippo inhaled grass, hay, seeds and probably insects in the process. He was sneezing for an hour but he and Neira love fresh mouse.
Um es kurz zu machen: wir haben jetzt einen noch neueren Kühlschrank. Mir ist es recht, solange er magnetisch ist. Als Zückerli mag gelten, dass das Team von Aqua Solar unseren Barkühlschrank abkauft.
We'll skip the technicalities and report that, as any boat-owner can tell you, the solution to our problem was to throw money at it till it went away. In this case, we bought a new fridge. It runs on 12 Volts and doesn't need an inverter. Driving or being on shore power for a night really charge the battery; our solar panels help it hold the charge longer. We want to be able to spend, say, five nights without shore power. We shall see how long we last in the coming weeks. But the new fridge is in place and working fine. And, importantly, as you can see, it's magnetic.
Bis der Deal abgeschlossen ist bleiben wir im Hafen von Aqua Solar und beobachten abends die Eingeborenen bei ihren Wasserritualen.
Meanwhile, we spent the night in Aqua-Solar's harbor and were treated to a gaggle of local kids making up for lost time, since summer was slow to get here. Shouldn't they be watching tv or updating their Face Book page?
