Montbéliard heisst auf deutsch Mömpelgard, und die burgundische Familie, die es bis zum Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts besass, hiess entsprechend Montfaucon-Mömpelgard. Dann kam der Besitz durch Heirat an das Haus Württemberg, das es bis zur französischen Revolution regierte. Das Schloss stammt noch aus Mömpelgardscher Zeit, aus dem 13. Jahrhundert.
From the mid-15th century to the French Revolution, Montbéliard was ruled by the Stuttgart-based Dukes of Württemberg. How did that happen? The local countess married one of the Swabians. The castle was extensively restored in the 19th century.

This is a monument to the locals who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1. That war, largely forgotten today, transferred Alsace-Lorraine to the North German Confederation, a long-smoldering insult to the French that many historians think helped to pave the way for World War I.
Im selben Park befindet sich auch diese Gedenkstätte für die Toten des Ersten Weltkrieges. Dass sich Franzosen und Deutsche damals so unversöhnlich gegenüberstanden, hatte nicht unwesentlich mit dem Krieg von 1870 zu tun.
This monument, in the same small park, commemorates the fallen locals in WWI but the female figure is less martial, less heroic. The brutality of that war just didn't lend itself to celebrating militarism.

Während wir auf Stadttour waren, bekamen wir Besuch von Claudine und Pierre. Schade dass wir nicht zu Hause waren; wir haben sie bisher noch nie getroffen, sie kennen uns lediglich von unserem Blog. Später schickten sie uns ein Mail mit diesem Foto. Vielleicht treffen wir sie ja diesen Sommer irgendwo, wenn sie mit ihrer Dauphine unterwegs sind.
The harbor in Montbéliard is officially closed but here we are anyway. This photo, by the way, was taken by a couple that follow our blog and were in Montbéliard. They visited Plan B but we were in town. They sent us this photo and a nice note about their own boating plans. Cool.
