25 km und ebenso viele Schleusen führen uns heute von Dannemarie nach Mulhouse.

Wie mit dem vnf vereinbart, verlassen wir den Hafen von Dannemarie um Punkt zehn Uhr. Die erste Schleuse liegt keine hundert Meter entfernt. Von hier aus begleitet uns eine vnf-Mitarbeiterin, öffnet die Schleuse und fährt dann voraus zur nächsten, um sie für uns vorzubereiten. Ein personalintensives System, dessen Kosten durch unsere Vignette kaum gedeckt werden können.
We left our berth in Dannemarie at 10 sharp, as arranged. At the first lock, a mere hundred meters down the line, a VNF-er appeared and he accompanied us throughout the long day, opening and closing each lock. This kind of personal service is remarkable and we wonder if the cost of our sticker covers it.
Die Schleusen auf diesem Abschnitt des Rhone-Rhein-Kanals stammen aus dem späten 19. Jahrhundert.
Weiter oben hatten wir noch Schleusen aus den 1870er-Jahren passiert.

Die Landschaft hat sich verändert. Sie ist flacher, und die Dörfer haben bereits kein französisches Flair mehr.
A different region. The land is flatter and the houses are generally without much flair.
Der vnf führt Arbeiten an einer Schleuse durch. Wir fragen uns immer wieder, wie lange es dieses Netzwerk aus Wasserwegen wohl noch geben wird. Viele Kanäle sind schon jetzt nicht mehr befahrbar, weil sie nicht mehr unterhalten werden, und die Wassertiefen werden auch auf den noch befahrbaren Kanälen immer geringer. Das Ausbaggern kostet ein Vermögen, denn seit einigen Jahren muss der Aushub als Sondermüll behandelt und entsprechend entsorgt werden ...
The VNF is hard at work on this stretch. Good to see. But we do wonder how long the infrastructure we've been using will be on life support. Dredging these little-used waterways alone costs a fortune, and we heard recently that what they dig out has to be handled as hazardous waste, with much higher processing costs.
Um zwölf Uhr setzt sich Frankreich zum Mittagessen. Nichts geht mehr, auch Plan B nicht. Wir machen Pause in der Schleuse, in der wir gerade angekommen sind.
At 12 noon, the game is up. Lunch lays the land to rest, Plan B too. But we're not complaining. Lunch is a lifestyle plus in France.
Anderthalb Stunden später geht es weiter.
An hour and a half later, we're lockin' again.
Wir kommen gut voran als, vier Schleusen vor Mulhouse, unser Rythmus plötzlich von einem Frachtschiff gestört wird, das in gleicher Richtung wie wir unterwegs ist. Dadurch verlangsamt sich unser Vorankommen beträchtlich. Wir müssen jeweils eine ganze Weile warten, bis die Schleuse wieder gefüllt ist, nachdem der Frachter sie verlassen hat.
We were, relatively speaking, zipping right along when, four locks before the harbor at Mulhouse, a barge miraculously appeared in front of us, heading in the same direction. That slowed things down considerably, as barges always precede pleasure craft and we had to wait, and wait some more, while the lock was refilled after the barge exited it.
Am Kanal tummeln sich bei dem ausnahmsweise schönen Wetter eine ganze Menge Schaulustige.
The nice weather brought out lots of folks.
In der allerletzten Schleuse des Tages gibt unser Bugstrahlruder seinen Geist auf. Das ist ein kleiner Unterwasserpropeller am Bug, mit dem man den Vorderteil des Bootes hin und her bewegen kann. Während der Fahrt braucht man das Bugstrahlruder nicht, aber beim Manövrieren ist es sehr hilfreich. Wir vermuten, dass wir den Propeller verloren haben ... das Motörchen läuft noch, aber es bewegt nichts mehr. Um sicher zu wissen, was passiert ist, müssten wir Plan B aus dem Wasser holen. Das ist teuer ... Wir haben inzwischen einen neuen Propeller bestellt, aber wann und wo wir ihn installieren lassen, werden wir sehen. Hier in Mulhouse hat Roy uns auch ohne dieses kleine Teil ganz gut in unsere Box gebracht.
In the last lock, our bow thruster gave up the ghost. (Boats.) This is a little propeller athwart the bow, below the water line. It's operated with a joystick up on the bridge. It gently nudges the nose of the boat right or left, and it's a nice thing to have when maneuvering, say, backwards into a mooring. When we're cruising, it's never used. We'll see how things go without it. (Today was ok.) We think the prop simply fell off. (Boats.) We hear the little motor whining freely when we tap the joystick now but absolutely nothing happens. We've ordered a new prop but it can't be installed, if indeed our diagnosis is correct, until the boat is out of the water, which is rather an expensive operation -- circa 200 euro. So we'll wait with replacing this prop, if we can, until we're in Tholen, where the boat will anyway come out of the water for antifouling (under-the-waterline painting). (Boats.)
Und da sind wir nun. Morgen geht es weiter, durch die letzte Kanalschleuse bei Niffer auf den Rhein! Ob wir die Nacht darauf noch in Frankreich oder schon in Deutschland verbringen, wissen wir nicht. Wohl aber, dass wir dieses wunderbare Land mit seinen charmanten Bewohnern sehr vermissen werden. 💔
So here we are, in Mulhouse, for perhaps our last night in France, sniff. Tomorrow we may sleep one more time in France, or in Germany, but thereafter France will not be an option, at least for a while. Sniff-sniff.
