As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."

From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Impelleritis
Best practices

Heute morgen kommt Valentin und bringt unseren Motor wieder in Ordnung.

Valentin came onboard this morning. He quickly worked his way down a short checklist.

He made a call. Our engine is so new he'd never seen one before. Looking at the impeller was the next step.

Old impeller in his left, the new in his right hand. Initiates will recognize what we plain folks will miss. Valentin said we did well to stop before it failed badly. Actually every step worked as it should: The alarm came before an absolute and absolutely catastrophic failure of the impeller. And we had a spare on hand. And we were sent a decent mechanic via VNF. Plus, we learned how to do-it-ourselves, if need be. We of course wonder: if impellers are such vulnerable consumables --- they need regular replacement even if they don't fail outright --- why aren't they easier to examine and replace. Volvo Penta, are you listening?

Here's an innovation: after swapping out the impeller, Valentin asked to go for a quick test drive in the canal. Usually, mechanics finish their work, pack their tools and look to get paid. We included a couple of max power runs, just to see how the engine handled high revs. It heated up a bit but stayed within its comfort zone.

One more night in Courcelles, because of an errand that will soon be posted. We are very relieved with this outcome.
