Seine Aval 4

Vernon – Muids; 33 km, 1 lock, 3 engine hours.
Nachdem der Wind heute wie vorhergesagt nachgelassen hat, führt uns die vierte Etappe auf der Seine Aval nach Muids.

As predicted, the wind died down today and we were ready to leave Vernon.
Elf Kilometer nach Vernon kommen wir an die nächste Schleuse, Notre-Dame-de-la-Garenne, mit einem Verfall von gut vier Metern. Nach unserer letzten Erfahrung bereiten wir diesmal die langen Leinen vor.

After 11 km we approached the next lock, Notre-Dame-de-la-Garenne, with a drop of a bit more than 4 meters. After our experience with the previous lock, we broke out the long lines, 30 meters each.
Notre-Dame-de-la-Garenne hat vier Schleusenkammern. Wie üblich brauchen wir nicht zu warten, sondern können direkt in unsere Kammer einfahren.

As usual, we didn't have to wait. The long ropes, it turned out, were actually too long. Too much to handle. We plan to cut one in half, giving us two 15-meter lines, which should be enough for most locks. And we'll buy another 30 meter rope just in case we do need a pair of them one day.
In diesem Abschnitt der Seine gibt es viele Inseln, die den Fluss in grössere und kleinere Arme teilen. Auf dem Hauptarm kommt man schnell voran, doch auf den Seitenarmen gibt es mehr zu sehen. Da wir es nicht eilig haben, schlagen wir die 'Touristenroute' über die Seitenarme ein. Das Château de la Madeleine sieht von der Seine sehr beeindruckend aus.

The Seine is divided by many long, thin islands, creating two lanes, one is for the barges and the other one, a bit slower, for tourists like us. One of those side arms took us past the grand Château de la Madelaine. It was worth the extra time. 
Pressagny-l'Orgueilleux. Unser Wasserführer warnt, dass diese Seitenarme mit Vorsicht zu geniessen sind! Die schmalen Arme verschlammen schnell, und unterhalb der Inseln kann es zu Schlamm- und Gesteinsablagerungen kommen, die sich je nach Strömungsverlauf der Seine verschieben. Das erfahren wir am eigenen Bootsleib, als wir beim Zusammenfluss von Seiten- und Hauptarm nach der Île du Roule auf Grund laufen. Das knirschende Geräusch ist herzzerreissend. Wir kommen mit eigener Kraft wieder frei, beschädigen dabei aber ziemlich sicher den Propeller. Ob der Rumpf etwas abbekommen hat, werden wir erst erfahren, wenn Plan B das nächste Mal aus dem Wasser kommt. Das wird in Rouen sein, wo wir ohnehin einen Service für den neuen Motor vornehmen müssen.

Our guide warned that these arms of the river can be dangerous. They can silt up, leaving insufficient depth for safe passage. We had passed through one without incident but the next one got us. All of a sudden there was the horrible sound of the propeller hitting sand or gravel. Ungood! We were not brought to a stop but it is pretty clear that we damaged the propeller. Whether we scraped the hull or not remains to be seen. The boat has to come out of the water for its scheduled service in Rouen, and then we'll see just how much damage we did. After this nasty contact, the boat behaved normally, steered normally, etc., but above 11 km/h there was a new, irregular vibration that suggests the prop will need to be repaired or replaced. In the meantime, no more side channels!

We were shaken up but the boat carried on, and the surroundings once again were thrilling.

Das Ziel heute ist der Hafen Val-Saint-Martin. Nachdem die Wassertiefe aber schon bei der Hafeneinfahrt unter 110 cm fällt, treten wir schleunigst den Rückzug an. Grundberührung einmal am Tag ist mehr als genug.

The little harbor at Val-Saint-Martin was our goal for the day. We nosed into it and when the depth went to 110 cm, we immediately backed out of there. Touching bottom once a day is already more than enough!


Wir fahren weiter nach Muids, wo es einen Ponton für genau ein Boot gibt. Um diese Jahreszeit ist kaum noch jemand unterwegs und die sonst wohl ziemlich begehrten Plätze stets frei.

We continued on to Muids, where thankfully the pontoon, with room for just one boat, was free, and we tied up.
Muids ist ein pittoreskes kleines Dorf mit einem Café und einem winzigen Laden. Doch unsere Herzen sind schwer.

It's a nice, sleepy riverside town and we enjoyed a good walk, although we were still thinking about our brush with the river bottom. Merde.



Neben der Marie gibt es einen verrosteten Briefkasten, in den die Bürger von Muids ihre Vorschläge oder Reklamationen einwerfen können. Ob den wohl jemals jemand leert?

This exercise in civics is mounted in a wall next to city hall. The Mairie is the mayor and you can drop your suggestions and complaints into the box. It didn't look too actively used but who knows?
