As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."

Instapix

Französischer Chic auf dem Markt.

Spotted at a small-town market, this lady was very chic indeed.

The fire-fighting boat had to test its water cannon and the lads seemed to enjoy it.

This is a very low-tech approach to trekking. Four dogs, one too frail to walk. I think they were on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, a long way to go.

This guy made every impression of being a long-distance canoe tourer. What a great way to travel. Later, we saw him on shore with a big Shepard-Malamute hound. No leash. Very cool.

Unidentifiziertes Fluss-Objekt.

Unidentified Floating Object.
König Roy beim sonntäglichen Eieressen.

That cosy is a wee bit small for my egg.

If that's the waiting room, where's the doctors's office?

Crazy weed trimmer in the harbor of Valence. Much appreciated, since this hot summer has been great for pump-fouling water weeds.
Pixelgesichter in Avignon. Ein geheimnisvolles französisches Phänomen ...

Pixel faces. A mysterious national phenomenon here in France....

A hotel ship's captain loads his little car onboard. Nice to have.

In Avignon, a big British-flagged steel cruiser needed a little space to fit in behind us along the wall. Aila was in town so I began to move us forward alone and retie our lines. Nice of me. Then I heard a crack. The pushy Brits had not waited till I was finished moving Plan B. They tried to slide in and crashed into our flagpole. How they failed to see it I do not know. As this photo nicely captures, I was not amused. At first, I was worried they'd cracked the swim platform, which would have been very ungood. The flagpole is peanuts but, in my view, it's the thoughtlessness that counts here.
Was kann man tun?

Neira often comes to bed in the early morning, say, after six, and she slowly worms her way up the bed until her head on a pillow. Whaddareyagonnnado?

More signs of bull stuff in the Camargue.

Face Time!

Editor's note: This may be my all-time favorite FT photo. So French, that little beret!
