Rhône 3

Écluse de Châteauneuf-du-Rhône – Valence; 55 km, 2 locks, 6 engine hours.
Heute morgen herrscht so dichter Nebel, dass wir unsere Abfahrt erst einmal verschieben müssen. Nicht einmal der Frachter macht sich auf den Weg, obwohl der Berufsverkehr normalerweise schon gegen sechs Uhr aufbricht.

Das Atomkraftwerk Cruas. Gleich daneben liegt ein kleiner Hafen, dessen Einfahrt jedoch höchst tückisch ist.

La Voulte-sur-le-Rhône mit seinem mittelalterlichen Schloss wäre ein schöner Halt an der Rhône, wenn sie einem kleinen Schiff wie uns denn einen Platz anbieten würden.

The old town of La Voulte-sur-le-Rhône, with its commanding view of the river. King Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu stayed there, a sign of its former importance. Like so many towns along the Rhône, this one also offers no moorings so we could only admire it en passant, as they say.
Neira ist aus dem Leidensstadium ins Schmollstadium gewechselt. Ein gutes Zeichen!

Neira's slowly getting used to the idea that we're on the move now. 
Nach vier Tagen unterwegs wird das Brot knapp. Zum Glück haben wir noch aus der Schweiz importierte Kräcker, wie es sie in Frankreich leider nicht gibt.

After four days, we had little bread left but we did have a cache of Swiss health crackers to make a lunch.
Nach einigen geruhsamen Stunden Fahrt taucht der Hafen von Valence am Horizont auf.

After several calm, uneventful hours, that's the harbor of Valence on the horizon. We know it from last year. It's a big, reasonably well run marina and we were ready for it. 

Neira hat ein ausgezeichnetes Gedächtnis für Orte, an denen sie schon einmal gewesen ist. In Valence weiss sie genau, wo ihr Badestrand ist.

Neira's memory for previously visited place is impressive. She knew right where her bathing spot was.
Plan B am Passentenponton. Irgendwo hier im Hafen liegt auch die Rêve, das Boot von Hervé, den wir letztes Jahr auf dem Canal du Centre kennengelernt hatten. Und wen treffe ich auf dem Hundespaziergang? Hervé, Fifi und Fanny!

Here we are at the pontoon for passing boats. We know that Hervé, a guy we met last year on the Canal du Centre, keeps his boat, the Rêve, here somewhere.... And then Aila ran into him. 
Anschliessend lädt uns Hervé auf sein Boot ein, um uns Tipps für die kommende Fahrt mit auf den Weg zu geben. Was für eine unerwartete Freude.

Hervé is a slightly mad but very kind and capable fellow. Mad, I say, but in a good way. He's been upgrading his boat, a small English river boat, turning it into an electronic wonder. How about a thousand Watts of solar panels strong enough to power the air conditioner he recently built in. Mad as a hatter. He gave us a lot of tips for our upcoming routes in France. It was great to see him again, and his ever-loving' dogs, Fifi, the blond, and Fannie, two cute little heartbreakers.
