Troyes ist eine jener uralten Städte, die einst bedeutend waren und die heute kaum noch jemand kennt. Auf diesem Platz fanden seit dem hohen Mittelalter Märkte statt, auf denen Waren aus ganz Europa gehandelt wurden. Troyes war als Handeslplatz so wichtig, dass sich die lokale Gewichtseinheit, die Troyes-Unze, in der ganzen westlichen Welt verbreitete. Sie ist noch heute als Gewichtseinheit für Edelmetalle in Gebrauch.
Troyes is one of those nearly forgotten ancient towns that were once major trading centers, when goods moved over water and Roman roads, and modern national boundaries were not yet drawn. It was enough of a center to merit a bishop in the fourth century and to lend its name to a standard measure of gold or precious stones, the troy ounce.
Die Altstadt ist voller Fachwerkhäuser aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Ältere Bauten gibt es keine mehr, weil Troyes 1524 von einem Stadtbrand fast vollständig zerstört wurde.
