Tour de France: Zürich-Saverne-Nancy-Reims-Rouen

Wir sind nur ganz kurz in Zürich, doch zwischen zwei Terminen bleibt Zeit für eine Fahrt mit dem Riesenrad.

With a couple of hours between appointments in Zurich, Aila went on the Ferris Wheel to get a good view of the lake.

We took several familiar walks with her in the hills around town. The Allmend, the former communal pasture, is dog heaven today. We went there twice and Neira went nuts with joy. 

Es bleibt wenig Zeit für Besuche, doch es reicht für ein Nachtessen mit Suso und Dieter.

We had little time to see people but we did check in with Dieter and Suso. (Dieter is a photographer and somehow he often seems to strike a glum pose when he's on the other side of the camera. But do not be deceived: his humor is alway at the ready. At least we did manage the rare feat of catching Suso in a photo with her eyes open!) 

Und natürlich treffen wir uns mit Mutti und Xavie.

And of course we found time for Silvia and Xavie, her trusty Jack Russell.

Auf dem Heimweg besuchen wir ein paar Häfen, um eventuelle Winterhafenmöglichkeiten auszuchecken. Hier inspiziert Roy den Hafen in Saverne, wo wir auch die Nacht verbringen und ausserdem mit dem Restaurant de la Marne auch wieder eine glückliche kulinarische Entdeckung machen.

On our way back to Rouen we checked out a couple of possible harbors for next winter, for example, in Saverne, where once again the gods of random restaurant selection were gloriously kind to us. We stumbled upon the Restaurant de la Marne, the only going place we found on our stroll, and the reason it was going was clear: delicious food at reasonable prices. My Flammenkuchen raised the bar for such pizza-esque delights and Aila's Späzle with cheese felt like the best home cooking. 

Am nächsten Tag erkunden wir den Hafen von Nancy, wo wir uns eine Überwinterung durchaus vorstellen könnten.

The next day we visited the harbor in Nancy, which has its pros and cons. It was great to see these places live to really get a feeling for what they're like.

... bevor wir weiter fahren nach Reims, der letzten Station auf unserer Tour de France. Der hiesige Hafen ist den Winter über geschlossen, und auch ansonsten verlässt uns das Entdeckerglück: Die Restaurants unserer Wahl sind an diesem kalten Samstagabend alle voll, sodass wir schliesslich in einer Touristenschleife auf dem Hauptplatz landen. Das Essen ist zwar bei weitem nicht so schlecht wie in Coutances, aber auch nicht erinnerungswert.

The last stop on our Tour de France was Reims. No winter harbor, but a decent cathedral and over all quite a lively town. It's the center of the Champagne trade, so they do like to drink and eat in Reims. And here, ironically, our good luck with restaurants vanished. It was a Saturday evening and the several attractive places we passed were fully booked. In the end, we consumed something or other at a no-brainer café on the big square. Forgettable.

Am nächsten Tag geht es zurück nach Rouen, und zu Plan B.

And on we went the next day, back to Rouen and Plan B.
