Auf der Leie nach Gent
Going to Gent

Deinze – Gent, 30.2 km, 1 lock.
Wir verlassen Deinze auf der Leie, die unter dem Namen Lys in Frankreich entspringt und nach gut 200 Kilometern bei Gent in die Schelde mündet. Auf ihren letzten 25 Kilometer meandert die Leie durch Wälder, Felder und Dörfer, vorbei an vielen mehr oder weniger imposanten Anwesen. Es gibt auf diesem letzten Stück der Leie fast keinen Frachtverkehr und, ausser in Deinze und kurz darauf in Altena, keine beweglichen Brücken; man kann daher die Fahrt in aller Ruhe geniessen.

We left Deinze and headed for Gent via the Leie River, which originates in France, where it's called the Lys. This 25 km stretch begins in earnest after a narrow lock eliminates any barges. The idylic route passes lots of fields and forests, a few castles, some very handsome old houses and many, many McMansions, sterile holdings patrolled by robot lawnmowers, with little sign of actual human habitation. On this gray morning we had the Leie to ourselves. Speed limit: 7 km/h, which, I now can say, is just about right for this narrow and very curvy river route. 
Die Schleuse bei Altena ist so schmal, dass es für grössere Schiffe hier kein Durchkommen gibt. Die Schleuse steht immer offen, nur eine vom Schleusenwärter per Handkurbel betriebene Hebebrücke gilt es zu unterqueren.

Es gibt an der Leie einige sehr schöne und alte Anwesen, und etliche Neuvillen, die oft einen unbelebten und seelenlosen Eindruck machen.
Über Geschmack lässt sich bekanntlich streiten, aber ein Hingucker ist diese überdimensionale (und natürlich männliche) Bulldogge allemal.
Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit auf der Leie ist 7 Kilometer pro Stunde, was auf dem kurvenreichen Fluss auch angemessen ist. Nach drei Stunden fährt man in die Genter Innenstadt und den Hafen Lindenlei ein.

After three of hours of blissful slow cruising, we crossed the Ring Canal and continued along the Leie to our destination, the Lindenlei harbor in Gent. The town immediately appealed. Along the river, many houses have been renovated and expanded with interesting modern constructions. Over all, Belgium really impresses with its often bold mixes of old and new architecture. I've been taking lots of pictures that will appear in a subsequent Instapix post. And very close to the harbor, we looked up and saw this promisingly named pub, below.

Here we are, snug in our berth. Lindenlei has a great location, close to the old city, with a bustling residential neighborhood to one side and the very attractive Bijloke area, a vast medieval cloister campus which now houses the royal academies of art and music, plus a museum, a cinema and, no doubt, a lot more, to the other. We excited to explore Gent, which quickly moved up our Top List of cities, into the top tier along with Leiden, Haarlem and Zwolle. More to come!
