As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."

From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Wasserschaden
Expect the unexpected

An early start, good weather and good spirits. We're convinced that Neira acted as host and savvy veteran, showing Pippo where the beds are, etc. After the move-in yesterday, Aila and I enjoyed applying ourselves to cleaning and organizing. Things were humming.

Just before leaving, we noticed we had no place to mount our flag. The davits that held up the dinghy were gone, of course, and the flag holder was part of that assembly. Arjan had a couple of hardware possibilities and he and I were looking at them when an ungodly heavy metal groan emerged from Plan B. Craving a coffee, Aila had run the kitchen tap and the water pump was very unhappy. And through some mysterious circuit cross-feed, it seemed the sound was actually being amplified by the new, ultra smart and as yet unmastered car radio and iDevice player, which no one had knowingly turned on, but which somehow insisted on showing off its capabilities.

The noise certainly got Arjan's attention. His investigations soon brought forth a yelp and a burst of uncharacteristic profanity. A joint between two hoses had cracked apart in his hand and he played the Little Dutch Boy, not with his finger in the dyke but in our water line.

Jan was urgently summoned, as the freshly filled drinking water tank slowly emptied into the space below the floor.

The broken connection could hardly have been less accessible. But father and son worked with stubborn determination and the fitting was replaced. The leaked water was smartly vacuumed out and we were left thinking how happy we were that this crisis occurred here and now, and not two weeks or two months down the line.

By the time the dust settled, it was too late to travel. Oh well. We'll try again tomorrow.
