Als wir die Plan B – damals noch ROPAFE – im Internet sehen, gefällt sie uns so gut, dass wir beschliessen, sie uns live anzusehen. Wir sind zwar gerade in Flevoland, machen uns aber auf nach Zeeland und treffen uns dort mit Astrid, die gerade mit ihren Kindern ein paar Tage auf dem Familienboot verbringt.
We came, we saw, and we were conquered. We initially wanted a classic Dutch steel cruiser but after looking at many tired, unloved examples, the fiberglass Ropafe (as the Plan B was then called) looked like a jewel amidst the rust. And it was in use: the owner's family was aboard when we made our first, spontaneous visit.
Anders als die meisten anderen Boote, die wir uns angesehen haben, hält die ROPAFE was die Internet-Bilder versprechen. Für ihre 9.80 Meter Länge ist sie geräumig.
Short and sweet: 9.80 meters long is ... compact but when the space is cleverly used, it's all you (we) need. And without the usual interior helm, all the room inside is fit for living.
Mit zwei Metern Staahoogte (Stehhöhe) ist sie im Innern so hoch, dass sogar Roy überall aufrecht stehen kann.
And the Plan B passes one critical test: I can stand in it, which is true of very few boats we looked at. This is surprising given that the Dutch are generally pretty tall.

Rust never sleeps.
Während unserer Suche lernen wir einiges über Boote. Hier ein paar Bilder unserer ersten Kandidatin, einer Cascaruda. Ihr Zustand erweist sich bei der Inspektion als so schlecht, dass der Experte die Untersuchung irgendwann als sinnlos abbricht.
Above, an early heartbreaker, a classic steel cruiser with nice lines, great space utilization but a history of neglect and the genetic make-up of a Ritz cracker. We liked this Cascaruda enough to commission a survey, an expert assessment, which was a short course in Boat Integrity. We paid for our education and it was illuminating.
Dabei sieht sie doch so gut aus! Dass die Fenster unserer Auserwählten beinahe aus ihren Fassungen fallen, bemerken wir nicht, ebenso wenig wie ihre vielen, vielen anderen Defekte.
Good looks count for a lot but the windows were as loose as a five-year-old's front teeth, and under the floorboards...ugh!
Immerhin: die "staahoogte" stimmt!

Unsere nächste Kandidatin ist ein Altena Motorkruiser. Mit ihren 12.60 Metern ist sie eigentlich grösser, als wir es uns wünschen.
Our next serious flirtation was with this beauty. Long and voluptuous at 12.6 meters, only late in the game did we learn that boats over 12 meters long can't dock in, say, Amsterdam. How frustrating.
Aber sie ist sowohl innen wie aussen in einem nicht allzu schlechten Zustand. Naja. Nebst anderen Kleinigkeiten ist das Abwassersystem defekt, was dem Schiff eine unverkennbare Duftnote verleiht.
Handsome craft, and spacious. But beneath the surface, a foul stench of corruption ultimately made us head for the exit. The waste water system --- tanks and pipes --- was porous, and contrary to normal Dutch practice when a survey reveals such an "essential defect," the seller refused to pay for the needed repairs.
Schliesslich erweist sich die Bella Luna mit allen notwendigen Reparaturen als für uns zu teuer. Zudem erfahren wir in letzter Minute, dass Schiffe von über 12 Metern in manchen Innenstädten – zum Beispiel in Amsterdam – gar nicht anlegen dürfen. Die Suche geht also wieder los ...
Then there was the teak decking, which was springy to step on in spots, a sure sign of rot. And the hull needed painting and... well, a lovely boat but needing more than we were prepared to give it.
... und endet einige Wochen später mit dem Kauf der Fairline Phantom 32 namens ROPAFE, heute Plan B, mit einem Happy End.
Finally, we found the Plan B and the closer we looked, the more we liked it. By the way, it came with that dinghy in the photo, which is quite handy to have both in big cities and in the wild. Fairline is an English builder and even they don't build 'em like this anymore. Happy ending/happy start!
