You mean Neira (say Nye-ra). She’s coming, of course! Here she is in September 2012 on a ferry from Lauwersoog to the west Friesan island of Schiermonnikoog, getting her sea legs sorted out. She will no doubt take a central role in this blog in the future.

Nein. Pollux ist schon zwölf. Deshalb haben Monika, Roland und der etwa gleichaltrige Kater Wassili in Höngg sich bereit erklärt, Polli aufzunehmen. Sie lebt schon seit einiger Zeit dort. Wenn sie nicht gerade bei Monika und Roland im Bett schläft, unternimmt sie Streifzüge in die Höngger Wildnis.

Ah, Pollux, or as we call her, The Poli. No, at age 12 she’s happily ensconced in a lovely new home hosted by Roland and Monika and their masterly and equally mature cat, Vassily, who’s kindly showing her around the new neighborhood.

Plan B has a mechanical toilet. With a few up-and-down strokes you pump out the old, into the wastewater tank, and then add the new water via the handheld shower. Simple and reliable. The wastewater tank can be pumped out in harbors and at fuel stations.

Ja. Ist das Boot an den Landstrom angeschlossen, läuft er mit Strom, sonst kann man ihn auch an die Gasversorgung anschliessen.
And the fridge?
Very cool, literally and otherwise. When we’re moored and have access to shore power (220 V), it’s electric; underway it runs off the LPG bottles we use for cooking.

The boat has two batteries that charge when we’re plugged into shore power and when we’re cruising. Their task is primarily to start the engines. Underway, a generator supplies the juice. There are a couple of 220 volt plugs but most are 12 V. All lights onboard are cool and clever LEDs.

Most boats we looked at had simple electric heaters with fans. The Plan B has hot-water heating, with pipes going to heat exchangers. So it’s warm air heated by warm water.

Den Winter werden wir in Oudenbosch verbringen und von dort aus Ausfahrten unternehmen. Ziel ist es, erst einmal in aller Ruhe das Boot kennenzulernen und Sicherheit beim Manövrieren zu erlangen. Danach ... wer weiss?
What are your travel plans?
For the remainder of 2013 we’ll stay around Oudenbosch and accumulate experience driving the boat. F’rinstance, doh, we need to master parking and unparking -- the saltier term is probably ‘docking maneuvers.’
There’s a very attractive range of destinations in the area. Antwerp and Brussels are close by, as are some large nature reserves and numerous small cities and towns. And we’ve heard nice things about the River Maas and the city of Maastricht. Later on, we’ll likely venture into Germany, Belgium and, ultimately, France. And if the wind is fair and the gods are really kind, we’d love to cross the Channel and return the Plan B to England for a tour. But that’s really only a hazy sketch at this point.
