As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."

From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Seine Aval 1

Rouen – Poses; 45 km, 1 lock, 4 engine hours.

Jean-Marie, part-time harbormaster in Rouen, came by to say au revoir. Very sweet. He brought two bottles of wine ('For later,' he said, 'not now!') and offered to escort us out into the Seine.
Roy ....

No longer the weekly engine warm-up, it felt good to be moving again.
... und Neira sind startklar.

Neira's ready to go-go-go!

Here's Jean-Marie in the harbor runabout, leading us from the Bassin St. Gervais out into the Seine.

There can be plenty of traffic where the bassin joins the river so we appreciated the help.

Au revoir, Jean-Marie (although friendly text messages checking on our progress followed)!

A last look back at the harbor, where we spent almost six months to the day, and then a left turn into the Seine, direction Paris.

We won't miss the dust of Rouen's industrial port but it was a good winter harbor overall, much enhanced by renting a car.

Now it's back to the mostly lovely Seine. We passed these rock formations on the way downstream last October.

Parts of this church in Orvial are built into the cliff and date from the 12th century.

Where the rivers Eure and Seine meet.

We approached the lock at Amfreville in a small convoy, behind two barges. Given the depth of the lock (up to 7 or 8 meters) and the lack of easy tie-ups in the chamber, we decided to wear our self-inflating life vests, which are in fact mandated by a French law that is largely ignored by boaters.

All was peaceful as we approached the lock. The little convoy of three had been together for a couple of uneventful hours. But as we neared the lock, out of the blue, a big barge, the Excelsior, came barreling in behind us. We got out of the way briskly but there was no need for his speed. We would have yielded to him in any case. What's French for 'jerk'?

We didn't take any photos in the lock, not least because we were busy. There was ample turbulence and we had to re-tie our ropes three times as the water level rose. Some muscles may protest tomorrow! But the lock was passed and we hung a tight right turn into the sleepy hamlet of Poses, where we spent the night under idyllic circumstances. Yes, it's good to be moving again.
