Der Tholener Hafen wird mit einem Keermiddel versehen. Damit kann die Einfahrt bei Hochwasser geschlossen und der Hafen gesichert werden. Beim Bau kommen uralte Methoden zur Anwendung: zusammengebundene Weidenstöcke als Fundament.

A new dike is being constructed at the entrance to Tholen harbor. What you see in the photos above and below are bundles of saplings laid carefully on a layer of rocks. More fill will follow but this low-tech material is, we assume, based on centuries of Dutch dike-building experience. Why reinvent the wheel when saplings work just fine?

Seit einigen Wochen leben auch Katja und Ansgar aus München im Hafen Duivendijk. Im Frühling werden sie sich mit ihrem Segelboot Umiak auf die Reise machen.

That's Katia. She and Ansgar are wintering in the harbor with us, fitting out their big sailboat, Umiak, and heading out into the North Sea in spring. Nice folks and good neighbors.

Ansgar werkelt an der Inneneinrichtung der Umiak und holt sich dafür Rat bei Peter, dem Hafenschreiner.

There's Ansgar, freshly retired from a company supplying interiors to BMW and Toyota, so you can imagine his knowledge and his skills.  

Und hier sind die Hafeneigner Marian und Dirk bei der Besichtigung ihres neuen Bootes. Dirk baut daran in seiner freien Zeit und schätzt, dass es nach rund 2400 weiteren Arbeitsstunden fahrbereit sein wird.

And here's Dirk and his wife Marian on a Sunday, looking over their new boat, next to us in the hall. The stell hull was delivered earlier in the fall and Dirk estimates it will take 2400 hours before it goes into the water. That's about two years. It's his masterpiece, the culmination of five generations of Duivendijk nautical knowledge, and it's a pleasure to see it unfold.

I got to Zürich in time catch up with two of our favorites, Oswald and Elisabeth, in their house of wonders in the foothills of the Alps.

Ihr Haus ist eine Wunderkammer, in jeder Ecke gibt es Entdeckungen zu machen. Man bräuchte Wochen, um jedes der vielen Zimmer zu erkunden, überall sind Bücher, Bilder, Teppiche, Nüsse. Und in jeder Ecke trifft man auf Papageien, lebenden und solchen aus Holz.

I could spend a week exploring each of the many rooms, full of books, art and ... parrots, carved and live. They've built an aviary off their kitchen with six crazy-cute and curious parrots. What a trip, as we used to say.
