As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."
From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Oosterschelde 3
We decided to go to the town of Yerseke for our last stop before Tholen. There's a big port for oyster boats there.
15.7 Meter Durchfahrtshöhe.
The tide was going out and the digital sign showed there was 15.7 meters headroom under the bridge, which is useful info for sailboats with their masts.
An einer Sandbank sonnen sich Seehunde!
We passed this sandbar and were surprised to see a group of seals sunning on the shore!
Ein liebevoll gepflegter alter Kutter kommt vorbei.
And here's another old work boat that's found a good owner to take care of it.
There are actually three harbor entrances in a row in Yerseke, one for the big fishing boats and two pleasure boat harbors. We contacted the harbormaster by radio and he sent us to the second harbor.
The tide had receded further and the "channel" approaching the entrance was poorly marked. After a few meters, we were stuck in the mud, more likely, sand. We called the harbourmaster again and he quickly arrived to pull us to safety. It seems routine here, but we would have preferred they told us it was so shallow before we tried. Anyway, all seems well with Plan B, so we're happy.
Plan B is the redhead at the back.
We consulted the tide tables and saw that high tide was at 8am the next day. We were up and ready early and got out of Yerseke with 4.5 meters under us.
Just before the lock that separates the saltwater of the Oosterschelde with the sweet water of the canal, there was a mass meeting of gulls. Some good feeding was on hand, evidently.
And what does one do after a day's tour? Here's Aila, preparing the next post!

Oosterschelde 2
We move on to Burghsluis, the last harbor before the dam that can close off the North Sea.
Normally, the water flows freely but the dam can be shut, in 75 minutes, apparently, if a big storm surge is expected.
We were directed to a place on the long finger, near the restaurant and the crane. We like these, for privacy at least on one side, and easy access for Neira. By the way, for boat nerds, we're moored in front of a Nelson-hulled Northline 42, which may look pretty normal but it's not. Based on a ship pilot's vessel, it can cut through very choppy waters at 40 km/h with hardly a ripple. Cross-Channel bullet is what it is.
Burghsluis is run by its members. They tend to be mature types whose step may have lost some spring but the do get stuff done, like hauling this grassy tub out of the water.

Oosterschelde 1
The lock between the lakes.
The Zeeland Bridge, 5 km long.
Pretty quiet on the water today. A few sailboats and some fishermen. Summer vacation has evidently not yet begun. Good.
The great thing about boats, once your eye is a bit trained, is that they're all different!
Einfahrt in den Hafen von Colijnsplaat.
Entrance to the Colijnsplaat harbor.
Ninety percent of the boats are sailors. No wonder, with the North Sea so close.
I thought it was Chaplin (Hape) but it's Johannis de Rijke, a local whose renown as a civil engineer for flood control led him to become an advisor to the government of Meji Japan. He visited Japan in 1873! Imagine what he saw!
We've run into these once or twice before. You want to cross some water and you find this self-powered ferry. Just brilliant. And so anti-nanny. Note the lack of railings. A railing would only encourage people to pile in. No railing and you make your own calculation. Such a Dutch solution. In Switzerland, and dare I say America, the insurance mob would require disclaimers and life jackets.
Neira kann es nicht glauben.
Neira's thought bubble: 'We go for a walk and - boom - we're back on the water.'
This delay before the work begins in Tholen has been a wonderful break for all of us. We had an epic spring by our layabout standards. I still want a We-did-the-Rhine badge, like a Boy Scout. And sixteen hundred kilometres in over four months is a prodigious journey for Plan B's team. So slowing down these past couple of weeks, while completely missing Europe's heat wave, was ideal.

Veerse Meer 2
Lazy days on the lakes behind the Delta Works, just in-shore from the North Sea. We're tied up in Veere for one windy, choppy night.
We moved across the lake and found another unserviced mooring that was much quieter. We wanted to see how the solar installation was holding up. This time of year, at the summer solstice, we are really fit. Able to stay off grid (and keep the refrigerator cold) for five days at least.
Our spot at the outside finger in Kortgene, at Delta Marina. Lots to see on these waters.
Over 700 moorings here, most of them in use.
They have a well-stocked boat shop, too.
Looks like the ultimate steampunk espresso maker but I think it's a model of a filter system for diesel fuel. We have heard that when an engine quits in the middle of a voyage about nine times out of nine it's because of fouled fuel lines. For the record, we once lost power because of a clogged fuel line. It's a known known with boats. Another reason to avoid them at all cost, and we do mean cost!
All kinds of weird sea creatures underway here.
Your Blogsters in their natural habitat.
