Das ist Hans auf seiner Eventide, einem hölzernen Segelboot mit Baujahr 1953. Es stammt aus Maine, von dort kam es - unter eigenen Segeln - über den Atlantik nach Europa. Vor 15 Jahren strandete es in der Duivendijk-Werft, verschwand unter einer Plane und wurde vergessen, bis Hans es vor zwei Jahren entdeckte und erstand.
Of all the boxes in all the harbors we had to land here, in Tholen, with Hans as our neighbor. He is fettling his vintage American sailboat, kit-built in my favorite corner of the US, in Maine, in 1953. Hans is doing it himself, and having a ball. He bought this boat for a song here in the harbor, where it had sat unused for 15 years. A fixer-upper's fixer-upper. Oh, did I mention it's all wood?
Seitdem ist Hans ein Mann mit Hobby. Er hat die Eventide ganz alleine überholt; seit gut zwei Monaten ist sie wieder im Wasser.
He's got all the documentation. Built in Camden, Maine, according to a design by Wendell Warner. Third owner sailed it across the Atlantic. Hans has gone out under power but sailing is the real test.
Nachdem der nagelneue Mast gesetzt war, fing die Eventide an zu lecken und musste noch einmal für ein paar Tage aus dem Wasser.
Hans is having a lot of fun with this project. He's been at it two years and now he's really ready to sail the thing for the first time!
Hans hofft, bald zu einem ersten Törn auszufahren. Er war mit der Eventide schon draussen, aber nur unter (dem neuen) Motor.

Gestern hat er zum ersten Mal versuchsweise die Segel gehisst. Sie sind 17 Jahre alt, wie er stolz betont; haben ein paar Falten, sehen aber sonst noch ganz gut aus.
