As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."
From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Willemstad
The good news: Having replaced the electric pump, our toilet woes appear to be fixed. Nonetheless, we're still in Willemstad for a few days. Winds close to 70 km/h are expected in a day or two and we prefer to wait.
We had to leave our quiet spot at the end of a pier and because we need to be alongside a finger for Neira to jump in and out of the boat, the nice harbormaster put us right in the middle of things. We prefer being out of traffic and ignored but where we're now sitting we see, and are seen by, everyone. Oh well.
Boat note: the ship lying in front of us, the aspirationally named Quintessence, is a Linssen 53, almost 17 meters of steel for two people and a small dog. I must say, it's impressive but I find it cold and uninspiring. For the record, if I would ever go for such grandeur, my choice would be a Mulder 15. Granted, it's a bit of an unfair comparison in terms of functionality (and probably price, too) but we saw one here the other day and, believe me, it's the bees' knees. Plus, it has a tender bay, which is one box I'd definitely want to tick, by golly. Dream on. Meanwhile, Plan B has never been in better shape and we both love it a lot!
Around the corner from our harbor, de Batterij, is the Stadhaven, the preferred mooring for those who want to be seen. There are some impressive boats there but it's all a bit showy and un-private for our taste.
And who wants to lie three or even four deep for the 'privilege' of being stared at by the plebes?
One of the splashier craft in the Stadhaven was a Fairline, like Plan B. The photo doesn't quite do it justice, at least in terms of communicating its sheer scale. What a beast. Maybe 17 meters long. Not my beer at all, but impressive nonetheless.
The 'Chinese hoax' of global warming, at least according to the Trump admin, is producing masses of blue algae all over the world. Here, too.
The former residence of Prince Mauritz, built in 1623. I'll bet he had a sweet boat, too!

Last pics from Tholen: Dirk's hammer is around 80 years old, he guesses. He's the fifth generation of his family to run this wharf, and when we damaged the hull around a cleat, we wanted him to fix it.
Hidden beauties: these leeboards for a tjalk are ready to be picked up.

Ein weiterer Tag, ein weiterer Anruf.
Another day, another call.

Hornbach, a big-box hardware chain, but, I mean, you can actually buy single screws there! Not packs of twelve, ten of which you'll never need again.
We really use and enjoy the bridge on Plan B, for reading, working, snacking, whatever. Neira spends her day here in all but the coldest weather, dispensing free lessons in relaxing.
One line hanging from a mooring pole here had this silicon crayfish hooked into it. A fisherman's lure, evidently, it baffled us for a moment.

This is a tender bay, a near water-level storage room for a tender, aka a dinghy. My next boat (ha-ha) will have to have one. The dinghy's supposed to glide smoothly into the water at the push of a button. Not happening here. So while I love the idea of a tender bay, it can't be forgotten that it's also just another thing on a boat that will go south one day, and probably at just the wrong moment, of course.

The toilet system story not is yet finished. Having renewed the hoses and cleaned out the holding tank, we discover that the pump now leaks. Only a fine mist, but no thank you. And a couple of the screws holding it together turn freely, that is, they don't tighten. It's time for a heart transplant. A new pump is on the way.
Willemstad is a better place than many to spend a few days.
We can even combine the everyday tasks of shopping and dog walking here.
Neira doesn't need kilometers of walking these days. She likes socializing with other dogs and sniffing around, etc., but she's most content on her daybed.
A blackberry pirate, in flagrante.
Aila transformed these raw foodstuffs into a creamy delicious cold soup.
A spoiled man at table.
