Handarbeiten
Handiwork


Seit ein paar Tagen sind wir hart am Arbeiten.

This is an 'after' photo, after cleaning; before it looked like I'd attended an Indian festival and celebrated with red, blue and brown dust.


Am Bug der Plan B müssen einige Reparaturen vorgenommen werden. Zudem entdeckt Jan, dass die Wasserlinie zu tief gezogen ist und daher neu definiert werden muss. Hier eine Nahansicht des Bugs; sieht aus wie ein Werk von Mark Rothko, nicht?

A hull of a story: Besides scraping and sanding the hull to get it ready for its annual coat of antifouling. Whazzat? Water is life, sure, and lively little microorganisms live in water. They accumulate over time and if left untreated a boat's hull will soon look like a barnacled old pier. Ungood. Thus, the need for a coat of antifouling paint below the waterline.

Which brings us to the next story: our waterline moved higher. I guess we have more stuff onboard than the previous owner so Plan B now sits a little deeper in the water. Here's Jan taping the new waterline.

I had the fun task of using an orbital sander to remove the paint below the new waterline. I vibrated like an electric razor for a couple of hours after I finished.



Dann trägt er einen ersten Anstrich auf, danach folgt in einem zweiten Schritt die rote Antifäulnis-Schicht.

After sanding, an undercoat was applied and after a second undercoat, the entire hull will be ready for a coat orange antifouling paint.


In der Zwischenzeit beschäftige ich mich im Haus. Wir haben Stoffe gekauft …

Meanwhile, back at the shack, Aila took on the task of recovering the seat cushions in the galley. We had earlier raided Ikea for the most garish fabrics we could find. That was the fun part. Now the finger-breaking work part begins.

All this, by hand. But the difference it makes is worth the effort.
