As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."
From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Roy auf Landgang
Fresh from the farm!
I had to go to Zürich for some days and I gratefully stayed at Oswald and Elisabeth's big old farm house high above the lake.
I learned about "Büscheli bundeln," tying branches and twigs into bundles so they can be tossed into the wood-burning furnace to get the bigger logs burning come winter. There was a lot of this stuff to process after some big winds lately. The bundles are stored beneath the stairs for easy grabbing when the time comes.
Oswald and Lisa have about a dozen sheep and it was time for half of them to be sheared.
That's Rodney, hard at work with one of the sheep. Rodney's Australian, lives nearby, and is a very accomplished shearer, a former champion and now a judge at sheep-shearing competitions all over Europe. He did seem to know what he was doing.
Oswald chats with Rodney's pal, who had just arrived from Down Under, where, guess what, he's a sheep farmer.
Auch Pedicure gehört auch dazu.
The sheep also got their peddies cured.
This is the boss ram of the flock, and a short-tempered fellow he is, too, but somehow without his fleece he seems a lot less . . . commanding.
Oswald cooks with pleasure and everything in the pot, including the lamb, comes from the farm, and is eaten with pleasure, too!
Naja, fast alle.
Lisa spoiled me, I have to say, with this chocolate cake.
Roys Zimmer.
This is where I slept and that rocker, a Swedish beauty, is from our old apartment. I'm always happy to see it (and use it).
Now, the drama. When I arrived, Moritzli, one of the two cats in the snapshot above, had been missing for two weeks. Lisa and Oswald made a circuit of his possible haunts every day but hope was about gone.
Then, the day before I left, a neighbor called and said he thought he saw a "red cat" in an unused manure cistern on his farm. Oswald and I went over to his place immediately and, yes!, it was the missing Moritzli.
Super Os sprang into action: off with his shoes, out of his pants, back into his shoes, down the ladder, snatching the starving Moritzli and carrying him up the ladder in a backpack. Good thing the cistern was only holding pure Swiss rainwater!
Endlich wieder daheim!
Lisa was at work but hurried home as soon as she could. Moritzli did not leave her side all night. We all were so happy, but especially Lisa, who had nursed these two almost from birth, feeding them with syringes of milk after their mother had been run over.
Maxli inspects his brother, who no doubt smells kind of funny...
Moritzli lost a lot of weight but his diet of frogs is over.
Maxli came to my bed for a visit and then joined his brother downstairs in bed with Elisabeth and Oswald. A very happy ending indeed! It was a great week. I got a lot of admin-type stuff done and caught up with two of our favorite people. Moritzli's triumphant return made for a perfect ending.

3x20 in Vevey
HP-60!
After Zurich, we headed to Vevey, a jewel of a town on the Lake of Geneva.
And it was all his fault: Hanspeter, one of Aila's oldest friends, who was celebrating his 3x20 birthday (and his retirement from Swiss International Airlines, the former Swissair).
Nini blickt nur selten so ernst...
Here's Nini, Hanspeter's wife, unfortunately photographed in a rare, unsmiling moment. Sorry. Normal Nini is a cheerful joy.
Hanspeter has always had a special touch when it comes to living well. He arranged for our rooms in the same house where the party was to be held. On our first evening, the terrace offered a spectacular view of the lake, the mountains and also of Christine and Herman, more friends visiting for the party.
Die Party selber musste dann leider wegen schlechtem Wetter drinnen stattfinden. Der guten Stimmung tat dies jedoch keinen Abbruch.
On the evening of the party, however, the weather failed to cooperate, so we shifted from the glorious terrace to a nice room inside. The group was small and convivial. Hanspeter said it included basically all the people he really cares about.
Here he is, chatting with his sister, Ruth, beneath the wings of his former employer.
Vevey is certainly worth visiting even if you don't have a party to go to. Unlike the better-known lakeside towns in Switzerland --- Lucerne, Geneva and Zurich --- there's no busy street to disturb the peace of the shoreline.
Of course, we examined the marina. This sailboat has a clever weather shield, we thought.
The weekly market was a good one.
Hanspeter and Nini's sons, Jeremy and Simon, are true b-ball freaks, as is your humble correspondent. They arranged for me to attend an A League game, Vevey vs. Winterthur. I loved it! Thanks, boys, and Allez Vevey!!

Roy in Zürich
Time to go to Zurich for a few days. See some folks, check the pulse of the pulsating Little Big City (as they once called it) on the Limmat and generally take a break from Tholen.
They're building everywhere behind the station, even between trackbeds.
But the medieval core endures.
And speaking of the medieval, that looks like Dieter ;-D))
Natürlich ist Zürich nicht nur Shopping. Ein paar junge Leute haben noch Hoffnung.
Remove the borders, the sign says.
The lovely Lake of Zurich is just a few meters from these moorings.
The building site for the Kunsthaus expansion that will house the not uncontroversial Bührle Collection.
Jahrhundert.
And an overnight in alpine winter splendor, up in Zuri-Oberland at Lisa and Oswald's sheep farm.
Here, the two delightful "farmers" prepare a delicious dinner from their homegrown products.

Zürich 3
Unsere Ferien in Zürich sind vorbei. Schön wars! Wir hatten alles: Sonne am See ...
After six weeks, it was time to leave Zurich. While we were there we always returned to the lovely lake ...
... wo Neira baden und Pippo Möven jagen konnte.
... where Neira and Pippo rigorously patroled the coast.
When you look at your home town through tourists' eyes you see its charms afresh. Of course, Aila's charms are always fresh.
And spring-like weather always helps.
Among the many highlights, Aila could spend quality time with her mother, left, and her aunt.
It was a great treat to hook up with friends. Here, a delicious and oeneologically edifying dinner with Elisabeth and Oswald.
Oswald's climbed a few hills here and there (ha!) and here he's telling me about a particular hairy/scary moment on Mount Kenya. I then recalled the immortal words of Jasper Hutchins, an old Downeaster, when asked if he'd ever been up on the famous, nearby Cadillac Mountain: 'Ain't lost nothin' up there; don't hafta go look for it!'
We enjoyed a rare and wonderful week of snowy winter during our stay. This is the view from Suso and Dieter's livingroom.
Zurich's cryophobia (fear of ice) demands that vast amounts of salt are spread on streets and sidewalks again and again. The floors on buses and trams are salt baths for dogs. And having once underestimated how caustic these salt baths can be, which left Neira's feet raw and bloody, we now scrupulously rinse them when we get home from a tour. The bathtub was enjoyed by all of us but for the dogs it was prophylactic fun.
And then it was time to board the City Night Liner for home. The dogs are seasoned travelers and the trip was uneventful.
