Nach drei Monaten in Friesland kommt uns Zwolle ganz schön urban vor. Die Einfahrt erfolgt durch einen Asphaltdschungel.
Zwolle's a provincial capitol today. It was a Hanseatic city in the 14th century.
Der Hafen hingegen ist eine eher triste Angelegenheit. Das mag auch daran liegen, dass er eine Baustelle und bei unserer Ankunft vollkommen leer ist. Später kommen noch zwei, drei weitere Boote an, parkieren jedoch von uns um die Ecke.
This is the tourist harbor. There were several boats around the corner and, sure, the season is over, but Zwolle pretty much turns its back on tourists. And that, for us, turns out to be the source of much of its charm. So many towns and cities we've seen in NL over the past two years have a sweet but ultimately false layer of kitsch, because that's what tourists want or expect. Many of these towns are still very enjoyable but there's a staged air about them. Zwolle's for the locals and that's fine with them and with us.
Wir haben keine Erwartungen an Zwolle. Ehemalige Hansestadt, klar. Hauptstadt der Provinz Overijssel. Ein Name, der über die Zunge rollt. Viel Geschichte wohl auch, aber das ist ja hierzulande nicht ungewöhnlich.
It's a handsome town with a lot of history, important since the 14th century, which is extremely rare in the country of land won from the sea.
Zwolle hatte seine Blütezeit im 15. Jahrhundert als Mitglied der norddeutschen Hanse. Die Sassenport, eines der damaligen Stadttore, spiegelt den Glanz jener Zeit wieder.

An dieser Stelle befand sich im 15. Jahrhundert die Bibliothek eines Dominikanerklosters. Heute speist man hier gediegen im Restaurant de Librjie.
This is de Librije, a 15th century Dominican abbey. The restaurant in there has had three Michelan stars since 2004. We sniffed the air aspirationally but that's it. But the group of buildings and the nearby city wall were wonderful. And the -- ha, ha -- bookstore in the Broeren Church, below, is just around the corner. So is the music conservatory and the art school. Culturally Zwolle punches well above its weight.

It's impossible to communicate the 'shock and awe' we felt when we came upon this bookstore in the 15th century Broerenkerk Church. More than a bookstore, it's a monumental cultural showcase. Das Museum De Fondatie ist eine weitere Überraschung. Es beherbergt eine phantastische Sammlung vor allem moderner Kunst, und zur Zeit zudem eine Sonderausstellung zum Thema 'Gefahr und Schönheit'. Da kann man rund 50 Gemälde von William Turner besichtigen, und zwar ohne sich durch Massen von Menschen zwängen zu müssen. Zwolle ist eben doch nicht London oder New York.
Now, to Zwolle's next miraculous attraction, Museum de Fondatie, The Foundation's Museum. Housed in a former courthouse, we'd noticed it's madcap mushroom dome immediately and intended to check it out, at least online. But the opportunity arose for Roy to quickly hop in and he was awed. On offer was nothing less than a show of JMW Turner, some fifty painting and watercolors, some from the Tate, Manchester and Edinburgh, etc., and others from the Museum Fondatie's own collection. Turner is such an amazing painter. Burning ships exploding in a firestorm at sea. All that energy communicated by furious dabs of paint. Roy reports this is the first time he's been to a Turner show without impossible crowds of people. Of course, Zwolle's not New York, London or Paris.

After the museum tour we passed this innocent-looking fence only to realize that each point of its toothed top edge was adorned with a lovingly placed wad of chewing gum.
