Wie alle Häfen an der Gelderschen IJssel erreicht man den Jachthaven De Engel in Rheden nur über eine steile Rampe. Zur Zeit ist sie sogar noch etwas steiler als sonst, weil der Wasserstand der IJssel weit unterhalb ihres normalen Pegels liegt. So kommen wir hier wieder einmal in den Genuss einer dreidimensionalen Landschaft.
We're enjoying our journey south on the IJssel River. The marinas all employ steep ramps down to the docks. At least they're steep now. Apparently the river is especially low at the moment. The de Engel harbor in Rheden was a particularly good stop.
Die Mitglieder des Engels geben sich grosse Mühe mit der Gestaltung ihres Hafens. Die Einfahrt ist gut markiert.
De Engel is lovingly decorated and maintained by its members. The entrance to the harbor area is marked with two buoys, and, as on the water, the red one is on your right if your head downstream (downhill). And the planted rowboat is also sweet.
Eine Überraschung wartet unmittelbar hinter dem Hafen, denn da beginnt der Nationalpark Veluwezoom. Da ist es richtiggehend hügelig! Wir kommen wir uns fast vor, wie auf dem Üetliberg.
But the big surprise was across the road. Rheden is on the edge of several national parks in a landscape of low hills and deep ravines. In other words, land with folds! In Holland! We were thrilled and we thought it looked a bit like the hills around Zurich.
Im Park liegt auch das barocke Landgut Rhederoord, zu dem ein Hotel und ein Restaurant gehören.
There's also a grand 18th century country house, now used for meetings and such, with a chic restaurant and hotel in an outbuilding. Great dog walking, just steps from the river.
Am Nachmittag erleben wir dann wieder einmal, wie klein die Welt ist: Rolf taucht auf, der Partner meiner Mutter. Die beiden möchten ein neues Boot kaufen und haben im Internet einen Cruiser gefunden, der in Giesbeck liegt. Das ist nur wenige Kilometer von Rheden entfernt. Rolf besichtigt das Objekt der Begierde genau an jenem Tag, in dem auch wir vor Ort sind.
Now, a what-a-small-world moment: This is Rolf, the partner of Aila's mother. He's a boat guy and he turned up in this quite improbable corner of the Netherlands today because he'd seen a boat online that interested him. He was five minutes from our harbor! Welcome aboard, Rolf!

Einquartiert hat sich Rolf, der eine Nase hat für gutes Essen und Trinken, im Hotel Rhederoord. Also genau dort, wo wir früher am Tag spazieren waren. Er hat auch gleich einen Tisch für uns reserviert, und so wird das Treffen im Restaurant gebührend gefeiert.
And Rolf, who has a nose for the food and beverage side of life, took a room at the hotel on the estate, and booked a table at the restaurant, which of course we were happy to sample. We enjoyed a delicious, well-orchestrated dinner of four courses plus desert plus wines. Aila and Roy hadn't eaten so well and so richly in quite a while. And it was great fun talking boats with Rolf and generally catching up on things Swiss.

The dessert required some explanation, and a dauntingly large syringe. Hmmm.
Der Effekt ist ein Erfolg, ebenso wie der ganze Abend. Wir haben schon lange nicht mehr so reichlich gegessen und getrunken ... Vielen Dank, Rolf!
