Maastricht

Wir haben das Vergnügen, seit gut einer Woche in Maastricht zu sein. Eine quirlige Universitätstadt mit einer gefühlten Million Cafés, Bars und Restaurants. Bei unserem ersten Stadtrundgang war das Wetter leider nicht so toll und die Bilder folglich etwas grau, was Maastricht überhaupt nicht gerecht wird.

We had the pleasure of spending about in a week in Maastricht, a lively university town where we felt right at home. Early in our stay the weather was gray and cool and the photos from those days don't really do the town justice.

Maastricht ist eine der sehr wenigen Städte in diesem Teil der Welt, die während dem Zweiten Weltkrieg nicht völlig zerbombt wurden. Und man merkt es. Rekonstruktion hin oder her, man spürt, ob eine Mauer tausend Jahre alt ist, oder im Stil einer tausend Jahre alten Mauer vor ein paar Jahrzehnten wieder aufgebaut wurde.

Maastricht seems to have escaped the kind of carpet bombing in WWII that flattened so many towns in this part of the world. So much of "old" Europe is in fact a meticulous reconstruction that restored the identities of shattered towns after the war's orgy of destruction. And even if the rebuilt structures are exquisitely done, they still don't resonate like the originals. Maastricht delivers.

Shoppen kann man hier auch sehr gut. Einkaufen ist das neue Opium fürs Volk, und natürlich sind auch Roy und ich alles andere als immun dagegen. Allerdings setzt das Leben auf einem kleinen Boot dem Einkaufen enge Grenzen ...

Retail is king here, too. Let's face it, shopping is the opium of the people. Aila and I are also not immune to the gratification of a good shop. It must play on instincts as old as hunting and gathering. But living on a boat puts a strict limit on frivolous acquisitions, which is fine by us.

Die Liebfrauenbasilika ist der Stella Maris geweiht, der Maria als Schutzpatronin der Seeleute. Davon scheint es in Maastricht sehr viele zu geben, das Lichtermeer vor ihrem Altar ist beeindruckend.

This church is dedicated to Stella Maris, patron saint of sailors. Why here, far from the sea, is a good question. But the church is a fine old building and the glow of the candles is impressive.

Ich liebe Wasserräder, sie strahlen so eine Ruhe aus. In Maastricht gibt es gleich zwei davon.

In dieser Dominikanerkirche aus dem 13. Jahrhundert ist heute ein Buchladen untergebracht. Toll, für einmal einen richtig gut besuchten Buchladen zu sehen, ist ja heute nicht mehr oft der Fall.

Eine kleine Schleuse trennt den ehemaligen Hafen, in dem heute der Jachthafen liegt, von der unberechenbaren Maas.

Und unmittelbar hinter dem Hafen liegt das Sphinxquartier, benannt nach der ehemaligen Keramikfabrik. Wetten, dass sich die meisten von euch schon mal in einem Sphinx-Waschbecken die Hände gewaschen haben? Sphinx war ein Pionier der Industriellen Revolution im frühen 18. Jahrhundert.

And behind the harbor is the Sphinx Quarter, a lively and growing urban zone around the enormous old Sphinx ceramic factory, apparently one of the pioneers of the Industrial Revolution in the early 18th century.

Bei Sphinx wurden nicht nur Waschbecken und Toiletten hergestellt, sondern auch Geschirr. Rechts im Bild das berühmte altholländische Tafelgeschirr Boerenbont, dessen Ursprung anscheinend bei den Bauernfrauen in den holländischen Kolonien liegt. Auch auf Plan B speist man übrigens von Boerenbont-Tellern.

They made every possible ceramic product here, from urinals to dishes, and all with that confident simplicity of good Dutch design.

In der riiieesigen alten Fabrik gibt es ein Studentenhotel, Studentenwohnungen und wer weiss was sonst noch alles. Besonders angetan hat es mir das Einrichtungsgeschäft Loods 5, hier im Bild. Was es zu unserem Leidwesen in dieser Gegend allerdings nicht gibt, ist eine Bäckerei. Glücklicherweise hat Roy einen Bioladen ausfindig gemacht, in dem man Brot in Schweizer Qualität kaufen kann.

Today, the factory hosts a hotel, student housing and God know what else. We were glad it was close to the harbor because despite Maastricht's super shopping, there seems to be a shortage of bakeries, of all things, and in the Sphinx there is an excellent organic shop with good, Swiss-style bread.

Und noch mehr Stadtmauer. Sie verläuft vom Hafen aus direkt in die drei städtischen Parks, ideal für Hunde und ihre Besitzer.

And all along the watchtower we did walk. These old fortifications always offer good dog walking!

Maastricht ist eine reine Freude und als Reiseziel wärmstens empfohlen.
