Two trawler-type boats that have seen lots of use and lots of fun.
Blaualgen sind eine Plage. Wenn sie anfangen zu faulen, bilden sie in Gewässern ohne Strömung an heissen Tage Blasen, die beim Platzen fürchterlich und ungesund stinken. Nicht schön!

The Blue Plague: blue algae is everywhere and it's not pretty. Where the waters are still, it will eventually start to rot and bubble, giving off an unpleasant and probably unhealthy stink. 
Es ist leicht, Roy glücklich zu machen: man bringe ihm einen Bossche bol, eine mit Rahm gefüllte Schokoladenkugel. Die Dinger sind so gross, dass wir uns eine teilen.

Is it a good time for a Bossche bol, a sphere of whipped cream wrapped in a bit of pastry and then covered in chocolate? Of course it is! The things are sometimes so big we have to share one. The guilty conscience of consuming one each would be overwhelming.

Sie sehen auf den ersten Blick richtig echt aus, die beiden Jungs am Fenster dieses Grachtenhauses. Besonders gefällt mir das eiskalte Händchen, das rechts unten aus dem grünen Wasser ragt. Ich habe es erst auf dem Foto gesehen ... Auf dem Zettel an der Tür steht, "Ausgang für lästige Kunden"!

The Dutch have a tradition of deep silliness, evident above in the window decoration and below in the Red Bullish transformation of a car. As traditions go, silliness isn't the worst of them, is it?

Zwei Fairline Phantomes neben einander, rechts unsere Plan B, eine Phantom 32 aus dem Jahr 1978. Das Ungetüm neben uns ist eine Phantom 38, fast zwei Meter länger und aus den frühen 2000er-Jahren. Fairline hat sich über die Jahre dem Luxussegment zugewandt und ist dabei mehrmals beinahe pleite gegangen. Die heutigen Besitzer sind zwei russische Oligarchen.

That towering flyer next to us is a Fairline Phantom, like Plan B but six feet longer, from around 2003. Fairline kept moving upmarket over the years but, like Jensen and so many other small English companies, it couldn't keep up with the investment needed survive in a market dominated by bigger firms. After several bankruptcies and revivals, Fairline now belongs to a couple of Russian oligarchs.

And the silliness just keeps on coming: a purple boat with a smiling face of fenders. Cultural note: In Switzerland about the most damning thing you you can say of someone is that s/he's "unserious," meaning superficial, unreliable. Somehow, I don't think that putdown works here in the Netherlands.

Es gibt Leute, die man bewundern muss für den Minimalismus, mit dem sie reisen. Diese beiden haben auf einem der Schwimmer ihres Katamarans ein Zelt aufgestellt, in dem sie übernachten. Das ganze Boot ist keine 7 Meter lang.

It's always a lesson to see how minimally some folks travel. What we're looking at is a couple on a very small catamaran, maybe 6.5  meters long. They were getting ready to shove off one morning in Willemstad. On the near pontoon, that's a little pup tent where they spend their nights. All they need.
Neira onboard! Sie ist der ideale Schiffshund weil sie am glücklichsten ist, wenn sie den gesamten Tag in ihrem Bett auf der Brücke zubringen kann.

Neira's sweet nature grows more pronounced as she ages. Very good dog.

An der Nordseeküste ist die Dichte der Militärflugzeuge in diesem Sommer ziemlich hoch.

Nato's been busy this summer, with fighter jets and reconnaissance planes regularly roaring out over the North Sea.
