These double rows of pilings are supposed break up the waves. The waves and the wind drag the sand off the beaches, which would leave the dunes exposed to the same destructive forces.


… und für endlose Sandstrände. Weil Wind und Wellen ihn stetig abtragen, muss der Sand alle paar Jahre aus der Nordsee gesaugt und am Strand neu aufgebracht werden, wie der folgende Film zeigt.

Judging by the footprints it seems we're not entirely alone. Below a video showing how the North Sea beaches are restored every few years, with sand dredged from the the sea floor. Holland is manmade, after all.

Für die nächsten Wochen sind wir Festland-Matrosen auf Landgang in Domburg. Um in Stimmung zu bleiben, besuchen wir gerne den Strandpaviljoen De Piraat.

We're spending some time in Domburg, at the center of a long strip of beach with restaurants every kilometer or so. Many are closed in winter but there's always something open. We seem to have settled on The Pirate down at Oostkapelle….


Das Lokal befindet sich in Oostkapelle, eine gute Stunde von Domburg entfernt. Das ist für den täglichen Spaziergang gerade richtig.

It's an hour's walk down the beach and it's always open.


Ungeachtet der etwas zwielichtigen Gestalten, die überall im Lokal herumhängen, ist die Kneipe gut geführt …

Glacé steht trotz der milden Temperaturen um diese Jahreszeit nicht gerade weit oben auf unserer Speisekarte. Im Piraat gibt es aber auch viele kleine und grössere Gerichte aus der Küche. Besonders angetan haben es uns die 'Toastis': Toasti Hawaii (Schinken, Käse, Ananas) für Aila und Toasti Sambal (Schinken, Käse, Sambal Oelek) für Roy.

But it's clean, well-run, dog-friendly and offers the snacks we crave: Toasties. Yes!

Nehalennia

Nehalennia ist eine Schutzgöttin, deren Kult ausschliesslich aus dem Gebiet des heutigen Zeelands bekannt ist, dem Gebiet, in dem der Rhein in die Nordsee fliesst. Ein Zentrum ihres Kults scheint Domburg gewesen zu sein. Hier hat ihr der Künstler Guido Metsers ein Denkmal gesetzt.

Nehalennia is the patron goddess of sailors in Zeeland, where the Rhine River flows into the North Sea. The town of Domburg seems to have been a centre of her cult. Aila and Neira join the goddess and her dog for a photo op.


Nehalennia trägt auf den vielen von ihr gefundenen Votivtafeln, Statuen und Statuetten eine Pelerine. Sie wird mit Früchten, nautischen Symbolen und einem Hund dargestellt und daher als Göttin der Fruchtbarkeit, der Seefahrt und der Unterwelt gedeutet.

The statues and votive altars depicting Nehalennia often show her with fruit, maritime symbols and a dog, and wearing a cape. She is thought to have been a goddess of the underworld, of fertility and of seafaring.

Domburg

Zur Zeit befinden wir uns auf festem Boden: wir sind in Domburg an der Nordseeküste im niederländischen Zeeland.

We're spending some time in Domburg, on the North Sea. It's a nice place to enjoy terra firma.


Domburg ist unbedingt einen Besuch wert. Im Hintergrund das Restaurant Het Badpaviljoen, im Vordergrund die für Zeeland typischen Pfähle zum Brechen der Wellen.

Here's another view of the beaches that run in both directions from here, with the Belle Epoch grand hotel in the background and one of many double rows of pilings that serve to break the storm-driven waves when they come in. It's all about preserving the dikes that guard the precious land that Holland has wrested from the sea.

Spazieren kann man in Domburg nicht nur am Strand, sondern auch auf dem Deich. Hier der Blick in Richtung Westkapelle, wo es auf dem Deich ein ausgezeichnetes Restaurant gibt. Die Wanderung dahin dauert etwa zwei Stunden - gerade richtig, um Appetit zu kriegen.

Walking's really a treat here. You have the beach, which runs forever, and the path on top of the dike.

Allerdings kann es auf dem Deich ganz schön windig sein.

These grasses help to hold the dike together. You can look but you can't walk here.


Hinter dem Deich ist es dann aber wieder ganz gemütlich, vor allem an einem Tag wie diesem. Das ist De Manteling, ein Naturschutzgebiet, das das Hinterland gegen den Seewind schützt.

And inland from the dike there are fields, heather and thick woods. A walker's paradise, especially on days like this one.

Die Fischer von OudenboschThe fishing fraternity of Oudenbosch

Während unserem Aufenthalt in Oudenbosch bewundern wir immer wieder die Fischer, die im Oudenboscher Hafen geduldig ihrem Hobby frönen. Bei Sonne und Regen sitzen sie da von morgens sehr früh bis mittags. Manchmal beisst ein kleiner Fisch an, den sie ins Wasser zurück werfen. Nie haben wir einen gesehen, der einen grösseren Fisch gefangen hätte. Die Ausrüstung ist ausgeklügelt: Ein kleiner Wagen, der sämtliche Utensilien enthält und gleichzeitig als Sitz dient.

They're patient, the fisher folk of Oudenbosch. And they are exceedingly well prepared, with neat-o combination seat-and-storage units holding all the gear and bait they need for a day. What they actually catch remains unclear. Of course, the entire exercise could be just a cover for enjoying a day out with the boys because we never see them keep anything they catch.

Insgesamt haben wir auf der Plan B etwa 25 m2 Wohnfläche - die 'Veranda' (das Cockpit) und die Brücke mit eingerechnet. Allerdings haben wir zusätzlich eine Menge Stauraum unter den Sitzbänken und den Betten. Damit liegen wir voll im Trend: in den USA sind sogenannte Mikrowohnungen der letzte Schrei:

In the foreground, the baby fence once used to corral kids, now sometimes used to contain our hound without isolating her totally.For the record, we reckon we're living in about 25 square meters (279 sq. ft.), including the veranda (cockpit, say the nautically inclined) and bridge. These outside spaces are of limited use this time of year so we're really living small. That said, simple measurements don't tell quite all of the tale. We have lots of clever storage areas, especially under but also over and beyond what we could call living space. So there's more to our domain than meets the eye. We see it as an experiment in micro domicile in the manner of

for example. (Thanks for alerting me to Dezeen, Johnny.) We can report that we've not felt cramped or claustrophobic. The cabin and kitchen areas allow us to be in "separate" rooms when we choose, or when it simply happens. And the satisfaction we derive from the efficient use of space is substantial.

Oudenbosch gehört zur Gemeinde Halderberge. Touristen, die wegen der Kirchen hierher pilgern, werden mittels solcher Schilder zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten des Städtchens geführt. Bei den Abrissarbeiten ist dieses Schild wohl vergessen gegangen …

We love this image: Oudenbosch belongs to the township of Halderberge, which the sign on the left optimistically describes as 'hartelijk,' or heartfelt. This fence blocks access to a large, vacant dormitory of the former school complex. The windows are boarded-up, awaiting an urban revival that really would be a miracle.

Wasser tankenThe re-up

Heute tanken wir zum letzten Mal vor der Winterpause Trinkwasser. Der Tank der Plan B fasst etwa 300 Liter, das bedeutet, dass wir bei vorsichtigem Verbrauch einmal Mal pro Woche Wasser nachfüllen müssen.

Eigentlich hätte das Wasser im Oudenboscher Hafen Anfang Oktober abgedreht werden sollen. Dank der warmen Temperaturen und der Fürsprache von Hafenmeisterin Mira, hat man das aber auf Anfang Dezember verschoben. Wir sind indessen auf den worst case vorbereitet: Dies ist ein 10-Liter-Wassersack, ein Abschiedsgeschenk von Elisabeth.

FYI: we are prepared for worst-cases. That's a mountaineering 10 liter water bag, a smart gift from a smart friend, which fortunately we haven't (yet) needed. Always ready, we are, sort of.
