Wir leben zur Zeit ein geruhsames Leben hier in Aigues-Mortes. Deshalb gibt es auch nicht viel zu berichten, und zu bloggen. Doch heute morgen bekommt Roy, nach über einem Monat des Wartens, überraschend einen Telefonanruf des Volvo-Penta-Mechanikers: Er ist in einer halben Stunde bereit, Plan B's Z-Antrieb seiner jährlichen Reinigung zu unterziehen. Das Frühstück wird also kurzerhand abgesagt, wir fahren in die nahe gelegene Bootswerft und hängen kurz darauf in der Luft.
We've been trying to arrange a season's-end service appointment for over a month. Since the stern drive is part of the package, we had to coordinate the Volvo Penta mechanic in La Grande Motte and the boat lift here in Aigues-Mortes. All of a sudden, today it happened. I was out with Neira when the call came: Move the boat to the lift in half an hour! Oui, Messieurs!
Wie stets in Aigues-Mortes, geschieht auch dies vor grossartiger Kulisse.
With the city walls as a backdrop, Plan B was lifted out of the water for a couple of hours to service the stern drive and change the propeller.
Wasser ist ein schrecklicher Ort für ein Boot. Muschelkolonien spriessen allenthalben, obwohl die anwuchsverhindernde Farbschicht, die wir
vor fast zwei Jahren in Tholen angebracht hatten, noch ganz gut erhalten ist.
Water, as they say, is a terrible place for a boat. But actually the hull didn't look too bad. The anti-fouling paint was pretty much intact below the waterline and the bits of marine growth are to be expected.
The stern drive looked a bit weedy.

But that was quickly remedied by a pressure spray.

Das ist der Propeller, den wir in
Tholen extra für Plan B hatten modifizieren lassen
– und den wir letztes Jahr
auf der Seine in Grund und Boden gefahren hatten. Inzwischen ist er wieder repariert. Wir bitten Didier, den Ersatz-08/15-Propeller durch das massgefertigte Teil zu ersetzen.
Last year, after running aground in the Seine, we had a stock propeller mounted in Rouen. The old, damaged prop had been modified by Jooren Schroeven, the prop gurus in Dordrecht, to ideally match the engine output at max power (4000 rpm). In the meantime, we had sent the old one to Jooren for repair and now we would remount it and keep the stock propeller as a spare. Ain't it lovely?
Als Didier den 08/15-Propeller abmontiert, kommt darunter eine Angelleine zum Vorschein, die sich um den Propellerschaft gewickelt hat. Glücklicherweise hat sie keinen Schaden angerichtet.
When Didier popped the prop off, behind it he found a mass of fishing line wrapped around the shaft, the harvest of a long season traversing the interior of France from Normandy to the Camargue. This much line could have created serious problems. Thank goodness it didn't.

The boatyard is normally "protected" by two labs, this tan one and a blackie. Today just the tan was on duty, and she made Aila and Neira feel very welcome indeed.

Work done, we were lowered into the water.
Zurück an unserem Hafenplatz, kommt Didier, um auch den Motor der Jahresputzete zu unterziehen.
We slipped back into our mooring and the next morning Didier returned to service the engine.
Given my own very limited skills, I know I tend to lionize the mechanically competent but Didier really impressed. He worked smoothly and cleanly and he had his eyes open. He saw things and fixed 'em, like some sagging electrical cables that he ran through plastic hosing which he fastened out of the way to keep them from coming in contact with the hot engine. This way, he said, we won't have to call him on the weekend! Good man.
Nach getaner Arbeit sind wir glücklich. Es ist, wie wenn man zur Kontrolle zum Zahnarzt geht und der kein Loch findet. Das Leben ist gut!
Work done, we are happy. Plan B is fit for next season and the many long, slow hours we logged on the interior canals this year did no lasting damage.
