As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."

From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Seine Aval 3

Conflans-Sainte-Honorine – Port Van Gogh; 69 km, 2 locks, 7 engine hours.

We returned to Conflans, a stop en route to Rouen last October. From here to Paris is about 70 river kilometers, 26 as the crow flies.

Plan B at the familiar Halte Fluvial. We wanted to try another mooring around the corner but as we approached the depth vanished. We backed out and returned to last year's spot.

Just a beautiful morning when we left Conflans at about 9 am on a Saturday.

Neira surveys the route from her perch on the bridge.

The lock we wanted to pass through at Bougival was closed for repairs. That's the kind of thing PC Navigo should tell us but we never entered it as a waypoint. It was a late idea, a possible stop to break up the 70 km route to Paris.

Instead, we pressed on to the Van Gogh marina, on the edge of Paris, passing beneath many bridges. Again, it was a glorious day.

We saw her in March from the road. From the water she and her twin are even more .... fluid.

There, under the arch, La Defense.
Was tun?

We hadn't bothered to call ahead at Van Gogh. It looked big enough to have a mooring for our modest boat. Well, where to begin? It's plenty big, and it's full of boats but without an active port office, which was indicated on our maps. In fact, it's yet another orphaned marina, at present "in reorganization." A human who picked up the phone said they had no room. Poof went our best laid plans. What to do? Press on three hours to Paris Arsenal, where we indeed have a reservation, or pedal back where we came from, which had not much to offer? As we fretted, a voice, in English, came over the open VHF channel. 'Hey you with the red tent: I have a place for you to tie up.' A guy had seen us hesitantly circling the harbor and with remarkable kindness rescued us from what was going to be an unhappy end to a long day. After five hours of cruising, which is more than we like, we faced two or three more hours to Arsenal, or .... Now we will spend the night where we wanted to, and be well positioned to travel to center the center of Paris well before noon the next day.
Das glückliche Ende eines langen Tages: Neira im Hundepark.

So, a happy ending, followed by a tour on land for the patient, ironclad Niera. We stumbled on a dog run, where she once again broke hearts.

Here we are, tied to a boat that's tied to a boat that's tied to the shore. We have to tiptoe over the other two boats --- one empty, one not --- to get to shore. A perfectly ordinary fact of boat life that everybody accepts. But that guy really saved our nerves, to be sure!

Hausboote zum Träumen
Houseboats we love

Finally, my own indoor archery range! Converted barges offer loft living on the water. We've seen a bunch of admirable ones.

Instapix

We've added a special effect to Aila's little zoom camera: the shakes. It fell, twice, and the display has had enough.

This was taken with my aged iPhone so it's not much sharper but it shows Neira coming from the boat ramp, which she uses as a jacuzzi. Goes in to her ankles and plops down for a cooling rest.

Jean-Marie clears out the flotsam at Saint-Gervais. Some great big tree trunks find there way in here.

Jean-Marie is a diver as well. He took a look at Jean-Charles' propeller.

This classic Dutchie is in good French hands. Boat people: note how the tent roof extends forward. Great idea.

Not just in Kansas or Oklahoma: local school budgets are easy targets for cuts. This poster protests a school closing.

Another churchly pile of rocks...

... showing its age.

And the church behind the wall is another impressive restoration work in progress.

Aila thinks they were interested in Neira. Well, I think these self-herding cows were enthralled by my rendition of Hey Jude. (It always works!)

Think France. Think wine and food, of course. But don't miss the hedges! The English may be a nation of shopkeepers, the Americans a nation of optimists and the Swiss a nation of watchmakers but the French are a nation of superb hedge-trimmers.

Neira would rather lie in the grass next to a little pond or stream but she's adapted well to boat life, and she's very comfortable in her new bed.

Spring, having put in a glowing appearance, decided to withdraw again. Cool, autumnal days as we travel.

While the Seine is no longer tidal above the Amfreville lock, its level does vary, controlled by the VNF authorities. Water levels were extremely high this spring, as you can see along the banks.

Unser Fernglas ist unverzichtbares Stück Ausrüstung! Roy behält den Überblick.

These binoculars are great. No squinting, fumbling, etc. Lift 'em up and really see what's going on up ahead, immediately. Thanks again, Rolf!
