As the Water Rat said to the Mole already in 1908, "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats …Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular."
From "The Wind in the Willows," by Kenneth Grahame.

Verwickelt und verstopft
Stuff happens
We'd had enough of Saint-Quentin "harbor" and moved on down the canal to a Halte Nautique in Séraucourt-Le-Grand, a big name for a very small town.
The pier has room for three or four boats and offers water and electricity, with a shop just minutes away. And it's a much nicer environment than tired, moldy Saint-Quentin. I had a couple of translations to do and we were happy to stop here for a few days.
But on the way in, we passed a couple of fishermen and, wouldn't you know it, one of the yokels didn't pull in his line until it was too late. We caught it with our prop and Aila, ever the hands-on type, tried to free it in her LBD (little black dress).
But this was a job for my longer arms. After some contortions, I unwrapped all 30 meters of it. No harm done.
In Saint-Quentin's untended harbor, our sea toilet sucked in some weeds and seized up. Our pals on Chaos2 had the same problem. For the uninitiated, a sea toilet draws water from the outside to flush the toilet, in our case, into a holding tank for eventual emptying. What you see here in my hand was actually quite lovely, soft, green canal grass. Nice stuff, but not in your pump.
I have a bit of a history with sea toilet pumps. My problem: the things are assembled with steel screws going into plastic bits and I again over-tightened the screws and broke the plastic. Drats!
But boat life should make one a bit resourceful and creative, and with the help of four hose clamps, two wrenches and a strip of inner tube, saved I knew not why until now, I improvised this quite effective closure. Sum-up: I'm ashamed of my brutish treatment of the pump but pretty chuffed at my solution. Next opportunity, the pump unit will be replaced.
Séraucourt-Le-Grand is close to the source of the Somme River, which flows to the Atlantic. Here, it's a still just a modest stream.
The town hosts a sizeable British cemetery for those who --- you guessed it --- died here in WW One. One of my desert island authors, Robert Graves, wrote an indespensible memoir of his time in the Great War, "Good-bye to All That." His lamentations on the waste of human life are unforgettable.
Darum herum gibt es viel Natur.
Meanwhile, back to today, Séraucourt-Le-Grand offered lots of nice spots for dog-walking and general relaxation. We enjoyed it, and my work progressed well, happy to say.

Instapix
We finally got to Arras, but by car. The finger of the Scarpe River is no longer dredged so boats can't reach the ancient town anymore. A sign of things to come? Anyway, we enjoyed a walkabout and were glad not to subject Plan B to more silty water.
Ein Chrysler, erinnert Roy an seine Jugend.
I checked: this well-preserved example retained Ricardo Montalban's 'Real Corinthian Leather' interior.
Drachenboot, Cambrai.
We had a surprising visitor the other day, obviously an escapee. Hope he get someplace warm for the winter.
We are still deep in the Western Front of WW1, with every town commemorating the dead.
Chaos 2 and Plan B have met several times on this stretch. Here in St.-Quentin we had an opportunity to photograph their magnificent garden again.
Gesichtserkennung.
Another coal wagon facial recognition pic, this time with a shy smile and flamboyant flowering hair.
Eindeutig Herbst.
Autumn arrives.
Friedhof für Haustiere, Douai.
Ad hoc pet cemetery, Douai.
After a number of even grander proposals failed to materialize, Napoleon I pushed through the present St.-Quentin Canal solution, and came to Cambrai to celebrate its opening.

We were excited and a bit nervous about this stretch. We have been climbing steadily to this point and now we were about to reach a watershed, traversed via two tunnels.
The locks come and go. We have not been forced to share a lock with anyone yet. The barges go alone and there has been very little pleasure boat activity at all.
Always nice to get the first glimpse over the wall.
... oder sich in der Sonne räkeln.
Aila enjoys a bit of sun and a stretch as we wait.
The locks have worked remarkably well so far on the Saint-Quentin Canal, until this one. A door got stuck and we had to pull over to the shore and wait a bit for things to get straightened out.
Soon enough, we were all on the way again.
We tied up for the night after the 14th lock, at Honnecourt-sur-Escaut.
The next day we knocked off after a mere three locks in the morning and tied up at the towing station for the Riqueval Tunnel where we waited for the 5 o'clock "train."
At 5.6 kilometers, Riqueval is the longest boat tunnel in France. A tow boat is guided by a chain. It can drag as many as thirty barges. This afternoon, it was just the couple on French yacht Cheers, whom we met in Cambrai, and us.
Cheers is longer and heavier than Plan B so they went first and we were tied to their stern.
We were worried about our air draft, our height above the water, which we calculate at around 3.3 meters. PC-Navigo said we could do it and, after a brief consultation, the towing crew agreed. In the end, we had plenty of room.
Motors can't be used in the tunnel and as we started out, we had to push off the walls a few times. But after al while, the ropes settled in and so did we. Thanks, Napoleon!
Hier darf man selbst fahren.
The next day, we entered the 1100-meter-long Lesdin Tunnel, and here we were under our own power.
We drove under the source of the Escaut River, called the Schelde in Holland, where it empties into the North Sea.
After thee nights off grid since Cambrai, we were looking forward to a real marina with all the services. But once again we were disappointed. The Port de Plaisance (pleasure boat harbor) in Saint-Quentin was decommissioned in 2012, it turns out. It just doesn't pay to keep these places running in this part of France.
A particularly unflattering photo but there are some pretty beat down boats here. Orphaned infrastructure strikes again.
Jahrhundert.
The town itself has its charms. It's been part of France since the 1300s while nearby Cambrai, on the other side of the hills that the tunnels pierce, was only added in the 1630s.
