Bei Duivendijks ist man auf die Reparatur alter Holzboote spezialisiert. Da werden wunderbare Dinge angeschwemmt, wie dieses beeindruckende Holzschiff, das wir in Ermangelung einer besseren Idee nach der Inschrift auf dem Bug 'Scheveningen' genannt haben. Im letzten Sommer waren die Eigner damit beschäftigt, die Reling zu schleifen und zu streichen. Dass dies nicht reicht, ist auch der eigefleischtesten Landratte unmittelbar ersichtlich.

Last summer the owners toiled to refinish the teak top railing. They said it was the most storm-worthy boat around. Went out when others turned home. But its problems were at the waterline. Sorry, I don't know the wood used in the planking but it was spongy.  

Peter rückte dem Rumpf brachial zu Leibe.

Peter kept removing the rot until he found sound wood. The owners came to assess the damage. The harbor experts (aren't we all?) thought it was a write-off.

Der Wurm sass übererall drin; hatte er eine Stelle repariert, fand sich sogleich das nächste Loch.

Peter had his doubts. But he is not a ship-builder. For Dirk it was a straightforward bit of surgery. Above, the solution presented to the owners for the rotted vertical timbers, who gave the green light on the repair.

And the work began in ernest.

Der Rumpf sieht nun, nach etwa sechs Wochen harter Arbeit, zumindest von aussen wieder präsentabel aus.

Now, after six weeks, the result is impressive. 

Die Scheveningen befindet sich übrigens in guter Gesellschaft; im Hintergrund ein anderes Grossprojekt, über das wir hier berichtet hatten.

They're not finished, but this ship could be in the water by end of May.

Dass auf der Scheveningen auch oberhalb der Wasserlinie noch viel zu tun bleibt, kann man unschwer auf diesem Bild erkennen. Wir wünschen den Besitzern viel Glück und ein dickes Portemonnaie.

None of these photos capture sheer stubborn stance of this tub when it sits in the water. I believe it can bob like a cork in the big waves. It's great the owners had the will and the money to get it back where it belongs. And while all the harbor experts clucked about the sky having fallen on the this old wooden boat, Dirk fixed the damn thing.
