Tholen ist immer noch von seiner mittelalterlichen sternförmigen Befestigungsanlage umgeben. Natürlich ist die Stadt inzwischen über die alten Mauern hinausgewachsen. Aber der historische Kern ist noch da, und wenn man durch die Gassen wandert, kann man sich ohne weiteres um fünfhundert Jahre zurückversetzt fühlen.

Tholen (say TOE-len) still bears the outline of its star-formed fortifications, even if the walls are long gone. Of course, the town has grown a lot since the Middle Ages but the old church still stands and the moat still rings the center. 

 

Auf dem Bollwerk, der alten Befestigungsanlage, kann man rund um die Stadt spazieren.

Plan B's crew enjoys investigating the fortifications, which are now a park where other canines are often encountered and duly registered in Neira and Pippo's ongoing documentation with the working title, "Dogs of Holland."

Auf dem Deich, der Tholen von dem Wasser der Schelde sichert, lässt sich sogar mit Aussicht wandeln.

Dikes constitute high ground in Holland and the do offer commanding views of the town.

Der Eingang zum Stadtwald wirkt verwunschen; ausser uns scheint hier nie jemand zu spazieren.

And here's the real insider tip for Tholen. It's called the City Forest and it's dog-walking heaven. No bikes, no cars, plenty of mud and lots to sniff. Rubber boots are recommended here. After two years in Holland, we've learned that a low, horizonal wooden pole marks the entrance to good paths, so when we saw this one we went right in and we weren't disappointed.  

Vielleicht liegt das daran, dass die Tholener lieber sitzen als gehen: vor fast jedem Haus steht eine kleine Bank.

With so much good walking nearby, no wonder the citizens of Tholen adorn their houses with benches. No? Then why are there so many benches, we ask?
